The winding streets at the heart of Singapore’s Indian community are full of intriguing smells, sounds and colors.

At the heart of Singapore’s large Indian community is Little India, the area surrounding Serangoon Road to the east of the Singapore River. While Little India is a popular destination for tourists, it hasn’t lost its authenticity, and it still functions as a trade center. See vendors selling their wares on the side of the road, vibrant colored flowers and a winding series of alleys that traverse the district. While many visit Little India regularly for the classic Indian curries available, the area is a great destination for those with an interest in history and the Indian culture.

Stroll down Serangoon Road and immerse yourself in the South Indian culture that centers itself there. Smell brightly colored flowers that adorn the sides of the streets as you admire the traditional architecture of the buildings. Little India is home to a number of sacred temples, but the best known is Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple. Take your shoes off and head inside for a peaceful escape from the busy street outside.

Shop for souvenirs or traditional food products at the Tekka Market, a true sensory experience. While the market is usually filled to capacity, it is a great place to sample the atmosphere of Little India the colors and aromas are unlike anywhere else in the area.

Try spicy curries or a local variation of Indian chai, known as tarik, from the local restaurants or street vendors. Curries here are authentically spicy, so be sure to speak up if you don’t want yours too hot.

Little India is located in the central downtown district of Singapore, on the east side of the Singapore River. It can be easily reached on foot from many downtown hotels, but is also served by the Little India MRT station. Free parking in the area is limited but for a fee parking is ample. Little India can be visited daily and there is no cost involved.

"The hotel is well situated, but was quiet. The inside and facilities are of a high standard and all the staff are friendly and willing to help. Our only very small problem was that there was no top sheet on the bed, only a duvet, which was too hot to sleep under. It would have been more comfortable ..."

Although one of the youngest country to exist #Singapore , under the stern leadeeship of Lee Kuan Yew has successfully turn itself into a global giant by capitalizing its strategic position as an important tradehub in South East Asia. Its rapid development policy has turn the tiny island nation's landscape into that of sprawling urban jungle and tall skyscrappers. But even with the rapid modernization the charm of old heritage Singapore can still be subtly around the city, where old preserved heritage building seamlessly blend in the urban jungle landscape.

One of the lesser known area where old heritage houses are still preserved is the emerald hill housings near somerset area. Taking a walk in these old streets while being surrounded by the view of skyscrappers around can make an interesting one of a kind experience on its own so you should definitely give it a try :)
