Ride the waves on a bodyboard and sunbathe on the sand at one of Oahu's most popular beaches, known for its starring roles in two top television shows.

Swim, snorkel, sunbathe and stroll on one of the longest uninterrupted sandy beaches on Oahu. Waimanalo Beach is a 5-mile (8-kilometer) expanse bordering calm, clear waters and flanked by ironwood trees. The beach has at least two claims to fame as a regular location for the television shows Magnum P.I. and Baywatch Hawaii.

Waimanalo enjoys a reputation as a good bodyboarding beach because the waves are not too high and they break close to the shore. To ride the crests and curves you’ll need to bring a bodyboard with you to as there are no equipment rentals on the beach.

Waimanalo Beach is popular with young families because the sand slopes gently into the ocean. When you’ve splashed in the surf and strolled by the water’s edge take some time out for a picnic. If the sun is too hot, go to one of the shaded picnic areas under the tree canopies.

This long stretch of shoreline is part of the Waimanalo Beach Park, a 75-acre (30-hectare) recreational area. Spend a night under the stars in one of the park’s designated campsites. For more details, including how to purchase a camping permit and to reserve your spot, visit the official website of the city and county of Honolulu.

During the summer, the beach occasionally attracts Portuguese man o' war, stinging marine creatures similar to jellyfish. Keep a lookout for signs that warn bathers not to go into the water.

Waimanalo Beach is situated on the east shore of Oahu, 26 kilometers (16 miles) from Honolulu. Three bus routes pass by the beach and for drivers there’s free parking in the beach park.

Lifeguards are on duty until the late afternoon and the facilities include showers and restrooms at the southern and northern ends of the beach. Waimanalo Beach Park doesn’t have any food concession stands so bring your own snacks and refreshments.

Keep Sherwood Forest for the locals. If they didn't ask for a softball field don't force them to have one. Not everyone want a softball field.

Go early in the day. This was our favorite beach: quiet and the undertow was minimal.
