• A plane ride can be a pleasure if you take the right gear. First things first, you'll need basic toiletries, such as a toothbrush and hairbrush, a fresh change of clothes and a good read. Next, leave space in your hand luggage for your phone and charger, medications and maybe a blow-up neck pillow too. Lastly, remember to bring your passport, travel documents and your credit cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Check carefully that you don't have sharp objects (like a knife or scissors) hiding in one of the zippers of your carry-on luggage. Other prohibited items include flammable or explosive products, such as aerosol cans and fuel, and gels and liquids in containers larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters).
