Shop at antique fairs and farmers markets then venture into the surrounding countryside of this quiet town in central Arkansas.

Nestled in the heart of Arkansas, Greenbrier is a small town with a vibrant local community that is keeping American heritage alive. The close-knit destination is billed as a place to live, learn, work and play. Boutique shops and flea markets offer interesting retail attractions while woodland parks set the scene for outdoor activities. Settled by pioneers in 1818, Greenbrier takes its name from the wild saw brier vines, commonly known as greenbrier, that grow along the town’s creek.

Greenbrier’s commercial activities and community life center around two central streets, Main Street and Broadview Street. Find practicalities like banks and general stores alongside cafés, fast food joints and restaurants. Browse work by local artists and take art classes at Martha’s Art Studio. Peruse stalls for vintage and one-of-a-kind items at Arkansas Peddlers Antique Mall and the Country Time Flea Market. Shop for fresh produce at Cadron Crest Orchard Farm Market.

Outdoor pursuits abound in the town’s parks and sports venues. Find baseball fields, children’s playgrounds and a disc golf course all within a short drive from the town center. Play a round of 18 holes at Permission Ridge Golf Course.

Bike, hike and camp in Woolly Hollow State Park, which surrounds Lake Bennett, a great place to canoe and fish. More biking and hiking opportunities are at the nearby Cadron Settlement Park. Explore the scenic creek, ridges and waterfall in Petit Jean State Park, situated about a 1-hour drive away.

Find an unusual animal refuge for this part of the world in Riddle’s Elephant and Wildlife Sanctuary, a refuge for both African and Asian elephants. Weekend camps offer the chance to interact with the elephants as you feed and bath them and learn about their lifestyles.

Reach Greenbrier by flying to Little Rock’s Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport, located 50 miles (80 kilometers) to the south. Rental cars, taxis and hotel transfers can be found at the terminal. The town has cool winters and warm summers, when the long days are ideal for enjoying the parks and outdoor attractions.

I expected there to be more selection as to food, coffee shops, etc but there wasn’t. Locals just referred me to Conway. I didn’t want to drive into Conway so I just made do. I did find a good Hibachi food truck.
