"The hotel was lovely, huge bathroom. Way too quiet for us though. Breakfast was over cooked, eggs on my wife’s eggs benedict were nearly hard boiled, bacon was tough. Very steep stairs down to breakfast room. The bar was closed most of the day, with a bell for service. We tried it but no one came. The staff were lovely, but just not enough of them, and same ones we’re doing everything. With the size of the hotel, this was an impossible task. We ended up spending most of ur time at the hotel opposite."

"Pros - The building and grounds are beautiful. Staff are very friendly and service was efficient. Rooms clean, and spacious with good heating. Cons - Room in general just requires updating. Wardrobe door broken supposed to slide but you have to lift it to move it and it was heavy. A lot of the channels on the TV didn’t work either. We were supposed to get a king but got two singles pushed together which creates an awkward dip in the middle. Not enough loungers or even seats in the spa area. People were turning up with literally nowhere left to sit and we couldn’t get a lounger one of the days we were there. Steam room and sauna broken during our stay (sauna got fixed late on the second afternoon of a two night stay)."

"Decor was lovely, room was nice (if not boiling hot) but the food was shocking. Handed an evening sunday roast and burger menu after having made a reservation in the afternoon. No sunday roasts or any buns/bread left, none of the starters we ordered were available, no hand cut chips... not sure why they took reservations. Very disappointing, unfortunately wouldnt recommended for this reason "

"Very clean room, great staff (friendly & helpful to the max, nice amenities. The Balcary has great ambience. So very happy to have stayed here. Have to point out the nice breakfast service. Wonderful!!!"

"We had a warm welcome on a very rainy February day. Our room was warm and comfortable. The food in the restaurant was really good. The weather stopped us visiting the Observatory, which was a shame. We will definitely visit again at a different time of year, as the hotel is well placed to visit places of interest. "

"Staff and food excellent. Booked a Superior Double room at £172, unfortunately we got a family room with a single bed and what looked like a Queen bed. Black mould on the bathroom ceiling and a light hanging out, bare wires above the bedroom mirror, heating was not on and we came back to a cold room, had to get the staff to sort the heating out, and although there is tea and coffee in the room with a kettle, there was no milk provided and so we could not make a cuppa in the morning."
