Delight in its wines, hike its picturesque trails and sightsee among many 19th-century buildings in this former gold rush town.

Jacksonville was founded on gold shortly after the first deposits of the precious metal were discovered in the area in 1851. Move to the present day to see many old buildings from the early years still standing. Visit these historical structures, travel into the lush countryside and sample local wines that the small town is known for.

Go on a trolley or self-guided walking tour of the town, which has been designated a national historic district. Among the many highlights are Sutton's Drug Store from 1856, the Table Rock Billiard Saloon from 1859 and the Jackson County Courthouse, which was built in 1883.

The town's old cemetery is divided into several sections based on affiliation to fraternal and religious organizations. Step inside the Beekman House, a late 19th-century Gothic-revival style home built for wealthy banker Cornelius C. Beekman.

Continue your journey of exploration on a wine-tasting trip. Jacksonville is part of the Southern Oregon Wine Country. Its warm climate has helped the growth of the local wine industry. Visit the town's tasting rooms and wineries.

Treat yourself to a shopping trip in Jacksonville’s small selection of independent stores. Purchase jewelry, clothes, handmade gifts and more.

For a change of scenery, enjoy the local countryside. Hike along the Jackson Woodlands Trails, which consist of more than 16 miles (26 kilometers) of footpaths. Find more hiking opportunities in Forest Park, which is also popular with mountain bikers. In the summer, try rafting and jet boating on the upper Rogue RiverOpens in a new window.

Jacksonville is located in Southwest Oregon’s Jackson County, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of the California and Oregon border. There are several ways to reach the town, including a 6-hour drive from San Francisco or a 7-hour drive from Seattle. Alternatively, fly into Rogue Valley International Airport in Medford, just 7 miles (11 kilometers) away. Let the town captivate you with its history, wines and natural scenery. At night, experience Jacksonville’s hospitality by dining in a cozy tavern or restaurant.

We loved the downtown area of Jacksonville. It is so quaint. It was fun to go into all the shops. We stopped at 2 wine tasting locations and they were both excellent. We will definitely be back again.
