Schloss Johannisburg and Grounds Tours

An eclectic selection of paintings and artifacts and a huge collection of cork architectural models are housed in a spectacular former bishop’s palace.

Set on a platform high above the Main River, the Schloss Johannisburg and Grounds are a center of Aschaffenburg’s cultural life and the perfect place to spend a few hours.

Built in the 17th century for the prince-bishop of Mainz, the palace later became the summer residence of King Ludwig I, who called the town his “Bavarian Nice.” Visit Schloss Johannisburg on a summer’s day, when the farmers market is active and the red sandstone of the building contrasts with the blue sky. Step inside, for a respite from the sun and to appreciate the interesting and diverse collections housed here.

Walk to the palace from the town, passing the many small boutiques on the way, as the distinctive slate roofs of the palace’s five towers come into view. Inside, visit the impressive chapel with its gothic ribbed vault and magnificent altar.

Continue on to the painting gallery, which displays work by Lucas Cranach the Elder. Admire the handiwork of the vestments from the former Mainz Cathedral.

Save time for an inspection of the 18th-century cork models, one of the world’s largest collections, with a magnificent reconstruction of Rome’s Colosseum.

Go back outside and wander along the footpaths that meander through well-maintained flowerbeds and shrubbery. End the day in true Aschaffenburg style with a visit to the on-site beer garden. Sip Bavarian ale while watching the river glitter down below.

Schloss Johannisburg is located just outside Frankfurt, with easy connections to the city and throughout the area. Walk here in 10 minutes from the Aschaffenburg train station, which has suburban train connections to Frankfurt. Drive from the center of Frankfurt in about 40 minutes. Metered parking is available in a few structures nearby. Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof is 45 minutes away. Frankfurt Airport is 40 minutes away by train.

The palace and grounds are open from Tuesday to Sunday during regular business hours, with slightly shorter hours in the winter months. On-site restaurants and beer gardens have variable hours. Purchase a ticket for entrance.
