Beautiful house with great design in really great neighborhood.
For us it was okay but the stairs were very steep so keep that in mind.
The bathroom is outside so not sure how comfortable this is in the winter. But it was a nicely designed bathroom and the foot bath is a great feature after a long day of walking.

If you are staying in the Gion area of Kyoto this hotel is a perfect choice. It was one of the highlights of our 2 weeks in Japan. Yasakahan is perfectly situated in the heart of Gion. Everything is walkable. The facilities are excellent - the foot bath and shower/spa is great. Absolutely loved the decor. You really felt like this was your little piece of Kyoto for a few days.

This is an amazing place to stay. The location is unbelievable, located on a side street yet literally steps from shops and food. It has a very close view of the Yasaka Pagoda from the second floor. The home itself is beautiful and meticulously clean, and equipped with essentials for a very comfortable stay. The washer/dryer was convenient and easy to use. The bathroom is on the first floor and bedroom is on the second floor. We opted to sleep in one of the rooms on the first floor for easy nighttime access to the bathroom while our children were on the second floor. Check in and check out were a breeze. We loved it here and would most definitely come back to this home for future visits to Kyoto. It was a pleasure and treat to stay here.

Fantastic traditional home in excellent location. If you are used to western homes this will be a big adjustment for you. But if you are into trying a traditional Japanese style home this is a fun option. It is well kept and easy to access. Be caution of the stairs

We enjoyed our first time experience of staying at a machiya. If you would like to stay close to the touristy spot in Kyoto, the location doesn't get any better. The view of the pagoda from the upstairs living room is amazing. The host was friendly and staff was helpful in replying to my emails in English. The foot bath was so relaxing after a long day of working. Things that may be slightly inconvenient: limited space to open the luggage (only front entrance area, and blinds were semi-transparent from outside at night); lack of full-body mirror (the only mirror is in the shower, which is a little inconvenient for me put on makeup since I need to carry my supplies in-and-out multiple times through the garden); washroom is located down the steep and narrow stairs (which could be a safety hazard if you wake up at night and need to use it). However, much of this is determined by the layout of the house, so it's not something that can be easily accommodated. Overall, it was still a decent stay.
We had an authentic Japanese experience staying here. The location was perfect - the house was on a quiet street while still being very close to the main attractions in the Gion area. The interior was beautiful, clean and well insulated with heated floors and AC in each room. Beds were very comfortable and the upstairs living offered a lovely veiw of the Yasaka Pagoda. The cute garden out the back with the foot bath was the perfect place to unwind and relax after a long day of walking. Overall, we absolutely loved our stay and appreciate the thoughtful design of the place ❤️

It was so lovely to stay in this guest house. It is well kept and all the amenities are like 4 star hotel quality. The beds were so comfortable. All the little details are so thoughtful. I can't think of anything negative to say about this place. The bath was amazing. I would totally stay here again.
Fantastic location. Very clean. Lots of space. The only thing I would warn you about is the stairs Between floors are very steep. If anyone in your party has an issue with stairs this isn’t for you. I loved this place! Many cute shops ,restaurants and a beautiful shrine just around the corner. Fully stocked with dishes, microwave, toaster, hot plate, refrigerator, coffee maker, hot water kettle. Also a washer/dryer.
A beautiful Kyoto house, thoughtfully and tastefully furnished yet comfortable for modern life with great view of the Yasaka pagoda. Every possible thing needed had been provided. We loved the bathroom. The little library was fantastic, and I loved to sit upstairs in the morning and watch the sun come up over eastern hills with a coffee and a book. Beds were good, it's quiet & dark, slept well. Great to have a washer-drier. Underfloor heating was good. the Arabica coffee shop at the end of the street was nice and there's zero line at 8am. The area is vibrant with lots to see, places to eat and shop. Very comfortable for 2 people, if you were 6 you better be real good friends.
However, the street leading up to Kiyomizudera was packed especially at weekends, even from early morning. (the evenings were fine.) I know it's been this way for 100s of years, it's nothing new, but still. It's quite a walk to the nearest rail station (10-15mins) and then not so convenient to get to Kyoto station- if you have a rail pass and plan side trips out of Kyoto, it's not convenient (Keihan line has a lot of good sights). Also it is 15min walk to the arcades/main shopping streets. There are buses of course but they are absolutely full so we ended up walking most of the time.
In short, beautiful house. if you only want to explore Higashiyama, it's in perfect location; if you want to explore around Kyoto or surrounding area, not so convenient.
Quaint machiya-style house on a really nice location. We really love the property, particularly the cedar bathroom. The place is less than a minute walk from Arabica coffee shop and a couple of minutes from the Hokanji temple/pagoda
