Dime Savings Bank Tours

A busy city intersection with tall buildings, a traffic light, and pedestrians.
A historic building with classical architecture, surrounded by modern buildings and a green space with seating.

See a remarkable mix of old and new at this former bank with one of the neighborhood’s tallest structures being built just behind it.

The Dime Savings Bank building was designed by Mowbray & Uffinger and erected between 1906 and 1908 with a Classical Revival architectural style. It was updated and enlarged in the early 1930s. Today it stands beside the construction of a super-tall and very modern building that will be the tallest in Brooklyn after its completion in 2022. Visit the Dime Savings Bank to admire the classic lines of the older building and observe the work underway on the newer structure.

Originated in 1859, the bank deserved its name because patrons could open a savings account for just a dime.

Notice the large columns of the building’s façade and the classic sculptures and clock on the pediment. These and the impressive dome over the original bank building will be retained when a 73-story residential and retail building rises above and behind, using the air rights of the landmark bank building.

The new structure, expected to be complete in 2022, replicates some features of the old, especially the unusual hexagonal design. Built of glass and bronze, the new building will appear to change colors as pedestrians walk past. Its height of more than 1,000 feet (300 meters) will make it the tallest building in Brooklyn.

The Dime Savings Bank building and its super-tall companion known as 9 Dekalb are located in downtown Brooklyn, a few steps from the Fulton Mall and adjacent to the campus of Long Island University. Several major train stations are located in the immediate vicinity. Take the subway to Atlantic Terminal or Borough Hall in 5 minutes or walk in 10 minutes. Midtown Manhattan is a 20-minute subway ride or 30-minute drive away. Parking in the area is extremely limited, so public transportation or walking are the best forms of transportation.

Access to the inside of the building is currently restricted as part of the construction phase.
