While this hotel is pleasant enough and reasonably handy for the ruins the the big drawback is the food.
This chain has a common menue throughout and, apart from breakfast, the food is unimaginative and poorly cooked. There are, however, local restaurants where the food is much better.

Staying in coba
Kind of rustic overall but great location and tasty food. Staff could be friendlier but is maybe shy! Crododiles just in front of the hotel.... Great for the adventure.

This hotel, which has the same structure of the Chichen Itza hotel of the same name, was poorly managed in comparison to that hotel. It is a wonder that service could make such a difference, considering the two hotels are structurally the same, but it does!
When we arrived at Chichen Itza, the reception offered us cool scented washclothes. There was a thoughtful style of grandeur to this hotel that the one in Coba didn't even attempt. A kind man showed us to our rooms and turned on the a/c and lights and showed us details. The waiters at the restaurant were friendly and attentive. There were extra pool towels provided.
Coba hotel was much different. Absolutely opposite from the Chichen Itza management style. The waiters were rude and inattentive. The reception was not exactly rude, but rather vacuous, uncaring.
However, since the hotel is basically the same as the villa in Chichen, it does have a lot of potential...if some manager takes an interest in doing so.
I'd stay here again for the location regardless, but the hotel management could be improved upon greatly.
Great hotel and extremely convenient for looking at the Coba ruins. I had an issue with my A/C unit and they moved me to a new room with no questions.
The lake right outside the hotel has crocodiles (!) and we were lucky enough to spot two of them in the morning. We got to the hotel in the afternoon and went to some of local Cenote's and then went to the ruins first thing in the morning - that is the best time to do it! The hotel was very nice; the food was great and the staff was superb!

Villas Arqueologicas Coba, Mexico
This is a comfortable chain, but only average. No TV or internet for amusement. It's close to the ruins and there were no better places nearby. We visited the ruins late in the afternnon and would still have had time to drive to Valladolid for a better hotel before nightfall. The food in this hotel was only passable, and there were no other options in the small town.

Villas Arqueologicas Coba
Walk to the ruins and watch out for the crocodiles in the lake beside the hotel. The local restaurants feed them the left over chicken, so they show up regularly. The rooms are small, the beds are a bit hard but the building is incredible with an open court and garden in the middle and a great natural-looking pool in the midst of flowers and palms. The hotel restaurant is good but f you're visiting the cheaper local ones just up the street, hit them at noon or before sundown as they close as the sunlight disappears.
We have often stayed here on our way back to Cancun and have always enjoyed the tranquility of the hotel and surrounding area, especially after the last tour bus has left the parking lot of the ruins nearby.
The hotel was under ClubMed management for some time and was maintained very well.
Sadly, since it has been under new management (Villas Archeologicas) it has fallen into disrepair with painted stucco pealing from the walls, the yellow walls in the interior courtyards need a new coat of paint. Bathroom soaps and shower gels are of an inferior quality and they also had no WIFI. We shall pass on this place next time in favour of someplace in Tulum.
Very nice hotel. Clean, modern, well maintained. Rooms were spotless. Air conditioned. No TV. Service was good. English is a bit limited so ability to speak basic Spanish always helpful. Beautiful interior courtyard and pool area. Food in the hotel was pretty good, menu perhaps unimaginative. (The dining place next door was packed) Good value for the price paid, however. The only real downside- no wireless or internet access anywhere in hotel. Hotel is about a 5-10 minute walk from the entrance to the ruins. By the way, at the ruins, it is definitely worth it to rent a bike for 30 pesos. The ruins are very spread out.

Nice oasis in Coba
The hotel was eerily quiet with few guests. The only television set was a big screen TV in the lounge that not work (and it was Super Bowl Sunday), the only computer available to access the internet was not working, the pool table pockets were full of holes that we discovered upon hearing the loud plop, bounce & clatter of rolling balls. Swimming pool was nice, surrounded by palm trees and lovely plants in an open courtyard. Rooms were great, service was excellent but the bar was devoid of rum, tequila, gin, wine or vermouth. Location was nice, right on the beautiful lake, private and quiet. Walking distance to everywhere, including the ruins of Coba. I would definitely stay there again, if it is still open. One had the impression that receivership was imminent and I hope I'm wrong.

Very poor service. Almost no other guests
The hotel seems reasonably new and structurally well maintained. However: (1) no TV in rooms and only TV (in library) out of service; (2) staff extremely lazy and uninterested in guests or service; (3) very few items on dinner menu available despite an extensive menu; (4) same for drinks menu; (5) room layout very strange with beds in alcoves. Furtermore, on review, there is no reason to stay in Coba as there is only one real activity (pyramid site) that closes at 4PM so it is easy to go to Tulum or elsewhere where there is more choice and activity

Jump Start
They even helped us jump start our terrible little rental car!
Pros: Excelent Location, very confortable hotel, impecable service (we arrive very late and they welcome us with a nice, cold beberage, just to mention an example),outstanding restaurant, beds are firm not hard and very very confortable. They have Mayan ruins within the hotel grouds very well preserve, pretty landscaping. It is poised at the edgf the coba lake. The quality price ratio is more than reasonable.
They also provide services like money exchange at very favorable rate. The librery is nice and inviting. The pool is little small but well maintein and pleasent.
Cons:In the neighborhood are small ants.
We went to Coba to avoid the tourists and it was fantastic. The hotel is out of the way, approximately 30 minutes from Tulum. It was very comfortable and relaxing. The food was excellent and the staff was charming. They speak very little english, however with a spanish english dictionary ($6 borders) you'll be fine. If you are looking for nightlife this is probably not for you. If you are looking for seclusion and romance it is perfect!
Not fancy but adequate, but quiet, excellent food and a wonderful oasis in a vew poor but interesting area - the only real option. A perfect location to get up early and beat the heat and the crowds (such as they are) at COBA. We bicycled nearly alone through the mininally excavated ruins on the Maya roads and climbed the largest temple alone. In the hot afternoon we took a dip in the pool and relaxed. The staff spoke less english than in the coastal areas.
