See the decadence that surrounded former Danish royals in this grand building or relax in the surrounding Kings Garden.

Rosenborg Castle operated as the royal residence from 1606 until 1710 and was the home of the then king, Christian IV. Today the castle, which is called Rosenborg Slot in Danish, is open to the public as a museum and houses the country’s Royal Collections. The park that surrounds the castle, Kings Gardens, is a popular destination for the people of Copenhagen to relax or play.

Known for his bold development of Copenhagen, King Christian IV commissioned a large number of the city’s most recognizable historic buildings. The Rosenborg Castle, built in Dutch Renaissance style, is one of his proudest architectural achievements.

Come early in the morning to see the Danish Royal Guard leave for Amalienborg Palace in a dramatic march. Spend the rest of the morning exploring the castle’s opulent interiors. Look up the self-guided tour on your smartphone to learn more.

The castle has been faithfully restored by historians and has beautifully plastered ceilings. It is full of historic household and special items. Peek into the king’s bathroom with its delicate porcelain tiles and check out the mirror room. The Knights’ Hall has a large collection of tapestries adorning its walls.

A permanent collection of artifacts includes historic paintings, statues and documents. Display descriptions are in English and Danish. Don’t miss the Danish Crown Jewels and the King’s throne.

Venture outside the castle walls into the sprawling Kings Gardens. A café serves traditional Danish food and beer, so try pickled fish or Carlsberg for lunch or bring a picnic. Further into the gardens you’ll find lush grass and shady promenades.

Rosenborg Castle is located just outside the city center and is best reached on foot or by bike. Those arriving by metro can use the Nørreport metro station, near the castle’s entrance. Rosenborg Castle is open daily in the summer months but is closed on Mondays and public holidays during the rest of the year. An admission fee applies and you must pay extra to take photos. Bags larger than small purses need to be checked.

Beautiful place! Give yourself at least an hour or longer to explore the castle and the gardens. Buy tickets right way and then you wait for your time, ours was about 30 minutes wait but we used the time to explore the gardens.

They give you a scheduled ticket, but there was almost no line and the grounds are very beautiful to walk around in. Well worth it to buy the combined ticket with the other palaces if you don’t have the Copenhagen card!
