Beautiful decor, amazing hospitality, cozy room. If you don't feel like dining at the hotel, try the Italian restaurant next to the hotel, it's good.

This property is absolutely stunning and the hospitality of the staff was practically unmatched during the rest of our trip. We arrived later in the day and wished we had come earlier to spend more time on the property. The food at the onsite restaurants was impeccable and the room was very comfortable. Staying here was incredibly relaxing after several days in Tokyo and we wished we had stayed two nights instead of one. It was about an hour from the Mt. Fuji attractions which were also some of our favorites from our trip to Japan (Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto).

The onsen was lovely, as were the staff. The room was spacious with lots of storage, excellent shower, comfortable bed and provision of everything we needed, including fresh ptjamas, robe and slippers daily… On the downside, the hotel looks a bit like a sports club or conference centre in places, it is stark, with little atmosphere in the bar. We were unable to try the Japanese restaurant for dinner, the French one had minuscule portions, probably exacerbated by the waitress asking if I wanted a half portion and clearly misunderstanding the question of how large it was - a 2 inch square portion of fish… the trout starter was very good and my partner pronounced his tiny portion of beef excellent. Lack of vegetables… western restaurant was ok, nothing special. Breakfast in the western part was pretty good and a walk through the gardens. I’m Not sure i would stay again, but service was excellent…

The hotel location and conditions are exceptional. Located in a nice area on a mountain, it next to a bus stop, so it’s very convenient for travelers in Japan, where you rely on public transportations to everywhere. The hotel is not tall, but covers multiple connected buildings, majestic. Only thing I don’t like is that they would charge me $40 for checking in 40 min earlier (2 pm vs 3 pm, but they let everyone checked in at 2:40 pm.

Everything was beautiful! The room was spectacular, comfortable, full of conveniences. The architecture of the entire hotel is amazing and it has such a rich history. I ate in all the restaurants and enjoyed room service as well. All meals were excellent. The onsen had a wonderful view, all conveniences were supplied, everything an onsen should be. The staff was very gracious, helpful and accommodating. Lovely, lovely, magical place

I liked the hotel , however it was impossible to accept and pay for a bottle of wine at dinner, it was overpriced, this was not an expensive bottle of wine but an extraordinary overpricing policy in the hotel .

A beautiful step back in time with modern comforts Japanese breakfast was superb Japanese dinner was super disappointing -misprinted menu, food substituted for what was ordered without being told Baths and room was terrific Mr Okabe the front desk mgr was attentive and helpful I will return Old and not worn New and not flashy Very classy

Historic hotel w refurbished old furniture. You have to like n appreciate old traditions to like this hotel. I was here in the mid ‘80s n still found it charming after nearly 40 years.

Short stay
Overall good service. Staffs are friendly but they are not as well trained as other five star hotels. Maybe it is serving mainly local customers who speak Japanese I find their ability to communicate with English is a bit weak. Very nice room and great onsen. Food price was on par with other high end hotel but quality of food just average.

The hotel, onsen and gardens are stunning! Room is spacious and elegant. Breakfast is expensive as well as onsite dining. But there are many options a few steps away. Transportation for sites in Hakone is right outside the premises. Nicest hotel of our extended trip in japan

Great hotel for our trip to Hakone! So convenient walking from the train station and so much history at the hotel. Also visited the Spa which was so beautiful and relaxing. This was our 2nd stay and it doesn’t disappoint!!

Fantastic heritage property in Hakone region. Not that close to Hakone township but accessible with a car. Excellent accommodation and much of the historic buildings still present and renovated. Newer sections still blend in with the older section.

Great Historical Hotel
This is a historical hotel in Japan but all renovated to today’s standards. Hot Spring SPA was great, gardens were beautiful Kikka-so where we had breakfast were wonderful.

Beautiful place, and despite its apparent age, underneath the structure has been retrofitted for earthquakes and, I assume, fire. So it looks old, it’s not worn, the place was stripped to its bones and after beefing up the interior structure the visible parts were either replaced, repaired, repainted, reupholstered or some combination that seems out of time the staff is abundant and polite, almost to a fault. Breakfast was delicious but dinner was a disappointment. The onsen is quite nice but segregated by gender, so as a couple we could enjoy it simultaneously but not together. The bes ride to Lake Ashi was 20 minutes and we had a sunset view of Mt Fuji that capped our trip. Also, for couples, rooms with beds big enough for 2 are limited, so make sure your honey can be beside you, if that’s important.

Wonderful building and gardens, historic property. It is worth for the onsen and the meals Japanese style. We booked the Japanese dinner and were not disappointed, full of flavors and new ingredients for us. The property itself has a decadent flavor and is a bit overpriced for what they offer. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Emerging as our favorite among Japan's 3 historic hotel gems. The Nikko Kanaya is fading and the Nara Hotel is not quite so ornate and extensive. Our best dinner was in the Cascade restaurant.

Fujiya Hotel is an historic building that has been through many evolutions. You can get lost just roaming its corridors where you will find many historical facts about the hotel and its history. Staff are the best and clearly 4 stars for this hotel is well deserved.
