If you're not prepared, air travel can be daunting. But there's no need to panic. Follow these tips and tricks for a hassle-free start to your getaway in Las Vegas. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• First things first, pack in your passport, official ID, cash and vital medications. Next, you'll need some in-flight entertainment to while away the hours. A juicy novel and a laptop crammed with your favorite shows are some terrific options. If you plan to take a short snooze, a quality neck pillow and a pair of noise-canceling headphones will also be useful. Finally, squeeze in a toothbrush and some cleansing wipes to ensure you arrive feeling fresh and raring to go.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of prohibited items differs between air carriers, the general rule to follow is avoid carrying anything flammable, sharp or explosive. This includes screwdrivers, knives, fireworks and fuel. Sports equipment like baseball bats, and items that could harm passengers, such as guns and swords, can't come on board with you either.

The trick is to be well prepared before you reach the security gate. That way, you'll be hopping onto that plane to Las Vegas before you know it. Follow these tips and get your vacation off to a spectacular start:

• Keep your travel documents and passport handy. They're the first things you'll be asked to present to security.
• The X-ray machine comes next. Remove anything on you that is likely to set off the alarm. This includes things like headphones or earphones, as well as heavy coats or jackets. They'll all need to go on the X-ray conveyor belt.
• All your electronics, including your phone and tablet, will also need to be separately scanned.
