Ahu Akivi

Venture inland to this sanctified site, home to a row of monumental carved stone heads created in the 16th century by the Rapa Nui people.

Typical moai - toppled sometime before the arrival of westerners, most likely during civil wars on this resource-starved island. There is a large town site here, though all that remains are stone foundations and cave huts.
