When I lived in Freiburg, Germany, I started a free walking tour company, and the Martinstor was my favorite building. It was built in 1200AD, one of four gates protecting the medieval city. Only two remain, as the others were demolished to make way for automobiles. Martinstor was spared, but it did undergo some changes - it was made larger to accommodate traffic. My favorite story though, is this: there is a blank space on the front (seen at the very bottom of this picture). There used to be a painting of St. Martin of Tours, France there, but in the 1960's it was taken down, to be replaced with something more reflective of today's German Freiburg. But nearly 50 years later, it hasn't been decided what should go in its spot, so it's still a blank space! German bureaucracy at its finest. #architecture
