Immediately next to the New Town Hall you’ll find the historic Old Town Hall, which was destroyed by bombings during World War II. While the decision was made to rebuild, the duties of the town hall relocated to the newer building and the Altes Rathaus became a tourist information center and historic attraction. Visit the Old Town Hall to discover its fascinating period architecture, learn about its history and pick up tourist information to help you navigate your way through Freiburg’s winding streets and diverse history.
Head to the hall during your stay for a great starting point to your visit in the city. Helpful staff will assist you with any questions you may have about your time in Freiburg and will be able to point out the best areas to eat, drink and shop. Pick up maps of the city to embark on your own self-guided tour of the city’s major attractions, as most are within walking distance of the Old Town Hall.
Outside you will find Rathausplatz, overlooked by the two town halls (known in German as a rathaus). The expansive square is an ideal place to take in Freiburg’s traditional architecture and do some people-watching. Admire the two town halls side by side while enjoying a meal or drink at one of the cafés, restaurants and bars with outdoor seating. Try local dishes or sample one of Freiburg’s famous beers.
The Old Town Hall and the Tourist Information Center are open daily with reduced hours in winter. There is no fee for admission. Reach the Old Town Hall on foot or by train via Freiburg’s central station.
