The history of the airfield from 1916 and it's use by the RAF and civil airlines.

Manston started its Aviation days as a Royal Naval Station in 1916, with a base at Westgate Bay for seaplanes. The early airfield was on the area now occupied by the passenger terminal.

By 1917 Manston airfield had grown to include four underground hangars, its own railway line to Birchington, a power station to generate electricity, barracks for 3,000 men and even an indoor swimming pool.

After WW1, training of airmen in airframe maintenance and engine repairs was taught in the School of Technical Training.

1940 and WW2 brought the Battle of Britain. Barnes Wallis arrived in 1943 to test his bouncing bomb at nearby Reculver, before the Dam busters carried out their famous raid. Roland Beaumont arrived with the Typhoon which came to be the most successful ground attack aircraft in WW2.

The whole building has a good feel to it. All the staff were superb. Warm, welcoming and helpful. The voucher for a cocktail in the basement bar was a delightful surprise. The basement bar with its Saturday DJ may be catering for the younger generation, but it was great fun, even for us with only few grey hairs...

「This hotel is a characterful gem. Relaxed vibe. The guy running the hotel is very friendly and if you have any issue or request you can whatsapp him rather than going to reception, which I found super convenient. I wish more hotels did that! Tip: Buy bottled water for drinking as hot water mixes in with the cold tap. 」

「Sehr guter Stopp etwas außerhalb von Margate. Anmeldung im Pub. Die Zimmer sind über dem Pub, aber ab 22 Uhr war alles ruhig. Wir hatten das Zimmer mit zwei Betten. Die Dusche war hervorragend, und die Handtücher waren auch klasse. Alles pieksauber. Der Pub macht mittwochs bis samstags Abendessen. Dienstag ist Bingoabend. Das (kostenlose) Internet war ultraschnell. Margate hat viel mehr zu bieten als ich erwartet hätte. Ich komme wieder. 」

「Newly refurbished room with new very comfortable beds plus hard and a soft pillow. Only stayed one night so commenting on breakfast. It’s ground floor light airy space or sit outside.
