Stroll alongside the Caribbean Sea, join in games of volleyball in parks and enjoy the music, bars and crowds that bring this boardwalk to life at night.

Take your time on El Malecon, Spanish for “The Boardwalk,” to enjoy the street performers, food stalls, bars and restaurants that line this oceanfront entertainment precinct. The popular pedestrian zone runs alongside George Washington Street, which is famed for its palm tree-lined parks, fine-dining restaurants and lively bars.

El Malecon runs along the picturesque Caribbean seaboard. Take a morning walk and watch the sun rise above a horizon filled with boats leaving and returning to port. Many locals start their morning exercising along the El Malecon pathway.

In summer, find a mix of families and couples populating the sidewalk. Stop at one of the promenade’s park areas such as the Parque Eugenio María de Hostos, and join in a friendly game of volleyball. Buy ice cream from stands and let the kids play on one of the playgrounds along the boardwalk.

Before evening falls, find a seaside café or bar to watch the changing colors of the sky. Restaurants along the boardwalk provide a wide range of food including traditional Dominican dishes and international cuisine. Try local specialties such as sancocho, a stew containing seven different types of meat, or mangú, a plaintain mash typically served for breakfast or dinner.

When the sun has set, the boardwalk is lit up by the lights from bars and filled with the sound of music. Join the throngs of partygoers who come to drink in parks or pubs, listen to live music or test their own voice at one of many karaoke bars. You can even try your luck at blackjack or poker at the Majestic Casino in the west half of El Malecon. Remember to keep a close eye on your belongings at night, as petty theft can occur in large crowds.

Visit El Malecon during Carnival in February to experience the excitement and color of the parades. The festival is known for its elaborate costumes and party atmosphere.

Swimming off El Malecon is not recommended as the water in the center of the city is polluted. Get to the boulevard by taxi or bus and then work your way along on foot.
