Wherever you're jetting in from, flying can be a seamless experience if you've planned ahead. Check out these handy travel tips that will get your Shangri-La vacation started on the right note. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Traveling on a plane can be a comfortable experience if you pack the right things. First of all you'll need basic toiletry items, such as lip balm and hand cream, a fresh set of clothes and something to read. Secondly, find a spot in your carry-on bag for your phone, tablet and chargers, your medications and maybe a quality neck pillow too. Last, but definitely not least, be sure to take your passport, travel docs and your credit cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Double-check that you don't have a pocket knife hiding in the bottom of your carry-on luggage. Other restricted items include explosive or flammable goods, such as bleach and fuel, and gels and liquids in containers with a capacity of more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters).

What to wear on a flight:

• Comfort should be your main priority when choosing what to wear on board. Loose clothing is a smart choice, as are flat, closed-toe shoes.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by prolonged inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Wander around the cabin and stretch your legs or do some gentle exercises in your seat to improve your circulation.

The trick is to be well organized before you get to the airport security gate. That way, you'll be boarding that plane to Shangri-La in next to no time. Follow these helpful tips and get your trip off to a great start:

• Be sure to keep your boarding pass and passport close by. They're the first things you'll be asked to present to airport security.
• The X-ray machine comes next. Remove anything on you that is likely to set off the alarm. This includes things like earphones or headphones, as well as heavy coats or jackets. They'll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.
