This idyllic village, tucked between the Caribbean Sea and a lagoon, provides visitors with a taste of beach life combined with adventure.

Cabarete is a laidback village that offers paradise beaches without the crowds. Explore the Caribbean outdoors, from a long, gold-sanded coastline on one side of the town to a lagoon reserve on the other. Work on your tan, try local watersports or go on excursions to surrounding natural attractions.

Cabarete became popular in the 1980s when windsurfers realized the potential of the coastline’s ideal conditions for watersports. Today, the township offers a number of accommodation options, restaurants and tour agencies to cater to visitors from around the world. Enjoy its relaxed atmosphere and try some of the affordable meals available around town.

Find a spot on Cabarete’s Encuentro beach. Swim in the Caribbean waters, which are temperate year-round, and enjoy views of the dramatic coastline. If you’re feeling adventurous, try one of many watersports offered by local agents, including surfing, wakeboarding and scuba diving. Calm waters around the bay make for perfect windsurfing and kiteboarding conditions, though experience is recommended.

Ask Cabarete travel agents about packages for adrenaline seekers and nature lovers. For a thrill, try canyoning or spelunking (caving) around the nearby Jungle River. Take a mountainbike or horseback tour through the rugged mountainside. Paths are suitable for experienced and novice riders and pass some of the most stunning coastline vistas in the country. To see Cabarete’s local lagoon, take a guided excursion into El Choco National Park.

Back in town, enjoy dinner by the sea and stay to make the most of the lively nightlife. Bars and clubs open up all along the oceanfront.

Cabarete is located a 20-minute drive from the Puerto Plata airport on the Dominican Republic’s northeast coast. Once in town, get around by taxi or bus or using local paid transportation such as guaguas (minibus), caro publicos (public cars) or motoconchos (motorcycle taxi).

It’s a beautiful small beach town and an excellent spot for water sports.

Very touristy. Sort of over-commercialized. Everywhere over sells themselves as small and local but charge very high prices compared to locally. Even the places that advertise as ‘yoga’ or ‘kite surfing’ hotels don’t actually have any real link to it
