Middle Basin, Bugsworth, Peak Forest Canal, Derbyshire Bugsworth Basin near Whaley Bridge was built in 1796 to form an inland port to receive, then distribute limestone along the canals of Britain. Bugsworth Basin. The restoration of this historically important canal basin complex took place over many years and was plagued by problems with leaks in the canal bed before finally being reopened. In this 1981 view work on many of the remaining structures was well advanced although plenty remained to be done before the basin could be rewatered. Stone sleepers at Bugsworth basin Bugsworth basin was the interchange between the Peak Forest Tramway and the Peak Forest Canal. Restoration work has exposed significant numbers of these stone sleepers which clearly indicate the lines of the tramway. The tramway was horse worked until closure in the 1920s. The main traffic was limestone from the quarries in the Peak Forest area near Buxton.
