Travel through the clouds to the slopes of an active volcano to enjoy spectacular views of Quito’s city center, the surrounding countryside and Andes mountain range.

A ride on the Quito Cable Car (TeléferiQo Quito) presents a breathtaking journey to the slopes of Rucu Pichincha, a peak on the active yet safe Pichincha Volcano. Admire the views across Quito’s sprawling city center and spot rugged Andean peaks. Follow walking trails to viewpoints and a small chapel. Afterwards, enjoy some family-friendly fun at a small amusement park. The TeléferiQo Quito is one of South America’s highest cable cars and travels from around 9,843 feet (3,000 meters) to a vertigo-inducing 13,451 feet (4,100 meters).

Take a seat in one of the modern cable cars and relax as you climb up toward the volcano. Look back to see Quito’s rooftops disappear into the distance as you break through the clouds. The journey time is approximately 10 minutes and finishes at Cruz Loma (Cross Hill), a plateau on the side of the volcano.

Viewing platforms at Cruz Loma present unbeatable views and superb photography opportunities. On a clear day it’s possible to spot snow-capped Andean peaks such as Antisana, Cayambe, Cotopaxi and Rumiñahui. Follow the trail to a peaceful hermitage chapel called Ermita la Dolorosa.

After returning to the cable car’s base station, you might want to visit Vulqano Park. This family-friendly amusement park has children’s play areas, traditional fairground attractions and thrilling roller coasters.

Situated in the Miraflores district, the TeléferiQo Quito is about a 15-minute drive from Quito’s Centro Histórico (Historic Center). The easiest way to get here is via taxi, although some public buses also stop nearby.

The cable car is open Monday to Friday. There is an admission fee and children receive a discount. Bring warm clothing as weather conditions can change quickly. Visit at sunset to watch as night falls upon Quito and the city becomes a sea of bright lights.

definitely bring a backpack with food and water and extra clothing. If you plan to hike maybe rain proof clothing as the weather can change quickly. The air is thin so you will burn calories while you hike so take some energy power bars as well. Don't forget the camera as the view is spectacular. The soil can be loose so a good pair of hiking shoes is also a good idea.
