Rose River Falls Tours

Rose River Falls showing a river or creek and forests

This series of pretty cascades is among several waterfalls to discover while hiking along scenic trails in the central region of a gorgeous national park.

Visit Rose River Falls when touring Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park. Wander along weaving, rocky paths, through flourishing forests and across rivers. Admire the natural splendor of Rose River Falls, which can feature up to four individual waterfalls. Combine your hike with stops at other beautiful spots in the Big Meadows area of the national park.

A 4-mile (6-kilometer) loop circuit begins at Fishers Gap Overlook and travels around an untamed wilderness area. Be prepared for steep climbs up rugged paths. Sightings of beaver, black bear, deer and opossum, among other wildlife, are possible along the way. Observe as the sun’s rays break through the forest canopy and cast a mystical light over the park.

The attractive falls are about 67 feet (20 meters) high and flow down groups of large boulders. They are notably impressive after periods of rain, when all four of the waterfalls are most likely to be visible. The lowest of the collection spills through a slim channel. Sit on a boulder, appreciate the delightful surroundings and listen to the calming sound of the rushing water.

Return along the same route or follow markers via the Hogcamp Branch of the Rose River to Dark Hollow Falls Trail. This is among the park’s favorite hikes and gives access to Dark Hollow Falls. From here, continue to Lewis Springs Falls and spot whitetail deer on the Story of the Forest Trail.

The closest park entrances to the falls are Swift Run Gap Entrance Station and Thornton Gap Entrance Station, each located less than 30 miles (50 kilometers) away. Pay the park access fee upon entry. Use the ample free parking at Fishers Gap Overlook and the nearby Harry F. Byrd Sr. Visitor Center.

April to October is the best time to visit Rose River Falls and Shenandoah National Park. Pick up park brochures and maps at the entrance stations and visitor center. Check the official website of the National Park Service for other park information.
