When I booked our stay at Gingerhill, I had no idea what to expect outside of an experience that would be unlike the typical room and board my partner and I are accustomed to. I can honestly say that this may be one of the most special stays that we have had the pleasure of experiencing. Falling asleep to the sounds of the forest in the Jungle Canopy and cohabiting alongside nature allowed us to seclude and connect in between adventures on the island. A charming, intimate, and surprisingly comfortable stay, we will be returning to this special place and recommend it to anyone who is open to connecting with the beautiful nature of the island.

Sadly the farm realities do not measure up to the marketing photos & videos shown on gingerhill farm's website and on their social media. The farm has a slick marketing force that posts almost daily images on instagram.
My husband & I paid for 7 days/nights. We hoped for a tranquil beautiful fun farm experience.
The property and our cabin were very disappointing. The sweet young woman who is the property manager was quick to listen and she tried her best to fix the issues that were within her control. For example, the first night we opened the bed sheets to find they smelled like mildew. She thoroughly laundered them the next morning which we appreciated. Also we had read on gingerhill's website that each accommodation had a small fridge. No fridge in our cabin. We had already shopped for our week's groceries. The property mgr was kind to bring an insulated shopping bag but we couldn't be sure our perishable groceries would stay fresh so didn't use the bag.
There is no food served or any chef on the farm available for guests (unlike what is shown on social media etc.) There were no classes or social gatherings at the farm as were mentioned and shown in gingerhill's marketing. I was excited to take a yoga class or 2 but nope not offered while we were there.
There was no hot water in the community kitchen so hard to wash the greasy skillet, pot or dirty utensils
I could go on & on about the deficits. It's just sad that the gorgeous marketing photos were not the reality.

Disliked: Cleanliness
They had just weed whipped the grass and it stuck to my shoes and created a big mess.
I loved my stay in the bamboo cabin at Gingerhill Farms! The staff was so sweet and helpful and the cabin suited my purposes perfectly. The grounds are a gorgeous lush forest full of fruit trees that is so lovely to walk around. I would recommend it to everyone who has an appreciation of nature and the outdoors :)

It's a very unique place to stay and you're truly surrounded by nature. At night the frogs and insects are loud and it rained one night we were there and that was very loud!
It would have been nice to have a fan in the tent since it was very hot on our first night. Bathrooms, showers, and the kitchen were fairly close but it was a bit of a walk every time you need to go.
We couldn't figure out where the main house or place where staff were was so we were mainly alone during our stay. The video they sent us on how to find our tent was helpful and necessary.
It would also be helpful to provide a wheelbarrow or cart to help get luggage from the car to the tents. It is a bit of a walk carrying everything.
Overall we enjoyed it as an adventure but we're glad it was only 2 nights.

Liked: Staff & service
Not easy to go to bath and restroom, easily get mosquito bite in the bath house
Peaceful and quiet, a great place to unplug and detach from the modern world and all its amenities.
The only down side is the outdoor shower. Basically you have to shower early while the sun is still out. We came back late to our cottage and opted to shower in the morning.
We loved staying in the jungle canopy! The staff was very responsive to questions via text and made our entire experience very straightforward and enjoyable.
We stayed 4 nights in the sunset cabin and it was truly a fantastic experience! Syliva was welcoming and helped us settle in and answered all of our questions. The space was clean, the bed was comfortable and the shower was hot! The views were beautiful and the property felt magical! ...and the fresh banana's were delish! We truly enjoyed ourselves! Mahalo!
This property is great for a camping retreat. quiet and out of the way. It looks like it does not get much use, though, For example, the path to our tent was overgrown with thigh-high weeds; there was no trash can in the tent, and only rusty rack to hold clean towels and hang clothes. It looks like the owners put a lot of effort into building the retreat space but have stayed on top of keeping it up. It is lovely if you are a camper complete with compost tolet outhouse and outdoor shower, but ask all the questions you can so you are not surprised by missing amenities.
Pro: Kind staff. Falling asleep hearing all the pleasant sounds of the jungle.
Con: 4-inch long spiders and lizards as bedfellows.
The stay would've made sense if the cleaning fee, about half of the total amount charged, wasn't there.
BEAUTIFUL!!!
We decided on a last minute trip to the Big Island. We didnt really want to stay at a resort. So glad we came across Gingerhilll Farm Retreat.
We stayed in Monkey Tree tent. The bed was so comfortable. Probably the best bed ive ever slept in besides our home one.
We live on a farm so this place was a littler more noisy for us. Lots of frogs going off and a very abnoxious rooster that i feel needs to go in a stew pot.or be moved away from all the cabins. He starts crowing around 2am. Other then that the place was amazing.
If your afraid of the dark and big spiders(harmless) this place is not for you. But if you want something off the wall and not a resort or you want a trip thats not going to hurt the pocket book i highly recommend Gingerhill Farm Retreat.
Oh we are not a young couple. In our 50's and this was one of the better trips we have been on. So laid back.
This was such a beautiful and relaxing space. I wish we had more time to stay!
Be ready for the coqui frogs. It can get pretty loud at night! (We liked it but could see how others could get overwhelmed by it.)
This was my favorite stay on the big island. I stayed four places. This one was the most "Hawaii" I would say. It was gorgeous and lush. Beautiful flowers and trees plus goats and chickens to pet!
The property is just awesome, far enough away from town but not too far to be annoying. Still plenty of places near by for breakfast and coffee as well.
I stayed two nights and they were the most restful and comfortable nights. The birds and cows make noise in the morning but you can close the door and window and barely hear it. I preferred to sleep with everything open and felt completely safe.
UNSAFE UNHEALTHY.We booked the sunset room for 5 nights big mistake. When we pulled back the dirty sheets on the bed 2 giant cockroaches ran out. There is no outdoor lighting making it unsafe to go outside at night. There was feces on the wall in the bathroom junk though out the property. The sheets were old and dirty the shower had only cold water. Most horrible place ive ever been .This place should be condemned.Lost our money on top of it they refused to give us a refund. They only gave back a very small portion. This place should be removed of the site so others won't fall victim.
While it can be great for some people, it was not the most suitable for me and my wife. I booked the bamboo canopy.
What's great:
- Parking is free.
- Greenery is great and refreshing.
- Dining room and views from it are great.
- Great host
- They provide free towels, shampoos, cooking materials, free coffee in the dining area, cookware and silverware to use.
Issues for us:
- Light was too dim for the room, not bright enough even in the day.
- The shared restrooms were too remote. They have compost bathroom which means no use of water. Not very convenient. Shower was also not too great cause of no door, only covered by curtains.
- Too many insects, geckos everywhere and some spiders.
- Taking luggage from car to the room was very hard and far, had to go through all the grass.
- The sounds of insects at night is too loud.
- Spotty wifi and network.
I think this is best for people who are staying 1 or 2 nights with small bags and are well prepared. If you decide to stay here, here's a few tips:
- Don't bring big luggage.
- Bring some bright lights for room.
- Bring bug body spray and anti-itch cream.
