The Flemish leader Jacob van Artevelde managed to undo the boycott of English wool imports during the Hundred Years’ War between England and France in the 14th century. The 15th-century “Toreken”, or Little Tower, situated on the Vrijdagsmarkt, was the house of the tanners’ guild. In the late Middle Ages the whole market place was surrounded with houses like this. In that period Ghent was one of the biggest and richest towns of Europe. #Ghent
