What an absolute gem of a hotel! So beautifully restored yet has all the modern comforts you need. Staff is very through with information.. they take the time with you... not just quick answers. The Speakeasy called the Counting Room in Basement was fun..Sam the bartender was great, very interactive with us and very knowledgeable with area history. We will definitely stay here again!
Nice property with a great little bar to visit before you head out to the local favorites. Was quite disappointed by how poorly the room blocked noise. There was a rowdy wedding group traversing between various rooms until almost 3am. These things happen, but given the hotel's website made a point to note the brick construction made the rooms very quiet, I have to disagree. The noise came in through the door, heating system, even the conversations on the street level below were easy to make out. Was a frustrating thing because we otherwise enjoyed the experience. Very unique, particularly for the area.

Liked: Staff & service, amenities
My experience was amazingly wonderful. I can't say enough about how kind and welcoming my hosts Sarah and Patrick were. It was my first trip solo (EVER!) and Sarah and Patrick made it so wonderful that I can't wait to come back to the Vault to enjoy the experience again. The attention that they pay to presentation and to guest comfort was exemplary, from the perfectly scented Beekman 1802 guest amenities (I'm affected by strong scents and these were chosen just perfectly to be fresh and not overwhelming) and the over the top continental breakfast with the lovely tea collection and yummy broccoli cheese quiche to the wonderful location of the hotel amongst the interesting downtown shops and convenient guest parking. I will definitely be visiting again soon!
This is a terrific place to stay in Houghton, close to everything downtown. It's absolutely lovely, with all of the amenities, wonderful staff and great service. If you are looking for a simple, quiet, but beautiful place to stay, this is it. I will be back.
Sparkling clean and well worth the price! The bar on the lower level was very unique with upscale cocktails and beer, and the bartender was excellent.
Hotel has no reception desk. You enter the building and use the phone on the wall to be buzzed in. Once inside a receptionist/ greeter checked us in on a marble island in the lobby. The room key also gives you access to the building. The breakfast was great and the complimentary refreshments in the lobby area was a nice touch.
The room, staff and amenities were all excellent. The location was perfect, easy walk to everything downtown. The room was very nice; clean, comfortable and the decor was tasteful. I would highly recommend staying here. I look forward to coming back.
Our stay was for pleasure and revisit roots. The hotel was excellent and beautifully decorated. Each floor has a name and the decor to match. Art Deco is the them in this hotel and it lived up to that! I would recommend and stay here again!
Really nice hotel I will definitely stay here again on the water side. I would have given a 5 star rating but I used all the cream and they didn’t replenish it also had to ask for another Kleenex box they just added a Kleenex flower on top also if you stay on the street side the traffic is noisy and the Black out curtains didn’t do a very good job.
What a quaint hotel with a European vibe. Comfortable bed, and nice pantry amenities. Situated downtown so you can walk to restaurants and shops. The French press coffee in the room is great in the morning.
Lovely property. Beds were so comfortable and room was very nice and clean. Breakfast and snacks were a nice touch. Very friendly staff. We’ll be back!
Awesome boutique hotel. Had a problem with the air conditioner and they swapped us rooms right away. Even helped us move the luggage over. I don’t remember her name but she was very pleasant and energetic. Bedding was wonderful.
Upon checking in, I noticed the Lobby to be very nice quality. It's in an old bank building. There is no real front desk and the layout was clearly not adjusted when converted to a hotel. The rooms were extremely modern-with all nice finishes. The parking garage is across the street and the hotel is an easy walking distance down the main street to get food. Breakfast was average (fruit, yogurt, a few drinks). Overall, this property was decent to stay at. No pool/fitness center/hot tub. The coffee they provide in your room is fresh and local with a french press. Very modern feel and some modern amenities although they could have many more amenities. I'd recommend this place if you need a spot while passing through the area.

Hi James, thank you for recommending us! A few comments on your review as it is very well thought out and we appreciate that!
We have COVID-19 precautions on our website and check-in letter that state how we are very limited in what the state is allowing hotels to offer for breakfast right now. We'd love to do more, and prior to COVID19 we did - but unfortunately during this time we are doing our best per Governor's orders. As a small boutique hotel in a historic building, we do not have a pool/fitness center/or hot tub but we added to our experience in other ways which we hope you enjoyed - unfortunately all hotels are limited in general to what is able to be used at this time with COVID19 as many travelers are finding.
The building was completely renovated upon remodel into a hotel - including the entire layout. It was designed without a front desk which is a common hospitality design into the new century and era of travelers. It makes the lobby more for the guests where they can utilize it without having to hear phone calls, etc from the staff - and our staff is still available at any time.
In all, we hope you will stay with us again someday and that we can all be back to normal!
The room was excellent! beautiful design and furnishings. Great location for our visit, we could walk to most everything we wanted to do in Houghton. Very comfortable bed. Street side rooms can be a little noisy early in the morning. Hannah was very gracious host and seemed to be right there every time we needed something. I trust the extra measures the management put in place to deal with travelers concern for health and safety due to the COVID 19 pandemic, well done. The breakfast offering was adequate, quiche was delicious! If I had any suggestions to improve our stay it would be to add a hook in the bathroom. If a room is double occupancy have 2 robes in the room. If you claim to be the UP's only luxury hotel up your game with breakfast items, perhaps a local or real half and half to compliment the nice locally sourced coffee. Perhaps some upgraded or local baked goods or expanded fruit offerings (I imagine there may be some locally sourced options for fruits?). If/when I return to the area I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. Very pleasant!!!
This was a 5 star hotel with 5 star service. My birthday vacation. They gave us an upgrade and gave me a gift when they found out. All staff very pleasant and personable. Houghton is a quaint college town with lots of history and amazing parks, waterfalls to explore. Sorry we missed the snow and the nearby ski slope and other winter activities.
Love the design and decor. Top notch bedding, towels and room amenities. I know this hotel will going amazing for years to come! Great new beginning!
We will definitely be back.

We are so glad you enjoyed your birthday vacation with us! We hope to see you again Kelly!
The uniqueness regarding this property is all in the name “The Vault” The atmosphere is that of an old fashion bank. Service was incredible. Staff was courteous, polite, and attentive. This establishment open just two weeks ago, in the heart of Houghton, everything basically in walking distance. Only 17 rooms. I would highly recommend and have every intention on staying once again.
