Satisfy your athletic interests in this small town in northern Idaho known for its spectacular natural surroundings and community spirit.

Hayden is a small northern Idaho town that prides itself on its quality of life and beautiful setting. Hayden Lake, with sloping shores just east of the town, has shimmering blue waters surrounded by forest and mountains. Use the public access at Honeysuckle Beach to enjoy the lake.

On the lake’s opposite side is the Coeur d’Alene section of the Idaho Panhandle National Forests, great for hiking and snowmobiling. In these lovely surroundings, participate in area athletic events, from fun runs to a full marathon, a sprint triathlon and the Coeur d’Alene ironman triathlon.

Hayden’s community parks offer boating, swimming, field sports and picnic areas. Swim, fish or boat in Hayden Lake at Honeysuckle Beach, which has lifeguards from June through August. Play or watch basketball, baseball, soccer or horseshoes at Croffoot Park and Sports Complex. Take kids to the Triple Play Family Fun Park and Raptor Reef Water Park or Silverwood Theme Park for hours of family fun.

Pappy Boyington Veterans Museum honors a local pilot and shares stories and relics from other service veterans from the region. In nearby Athol, visit Farragut State Park, a 4,000-acre (1,600-hectare) recreation area with hiking and hundreds of camping sites. Test your outdoor skills on the same territory where the U.S. Navy trained for World War II.

Ski at one of four resorts within a 1.5- hour drive of Hayden. Kellogg’s Silver Mountain Resort has one of the world’s longest gondolas, offering convenient transportation from the city to the mountain, along with fantastic views.

Enjoy Hayden’s organized community activities. April has the Kite Festival and Arbor Day Celebration. On Thursdays in July and August McIntire Family Park hosts free concerts. Hayden Days are celebrated here every July with a parade, music, food and crafts. In winter, watch the Hayden Lights Christmas Tree Lighting Program and Parade.

Hayden is about a 45-minute drive from SpokaneOpens in a new window, Washington. Visit any time of year for a pleasant vacation. Relax here or be as active as you choose.

Hayden is nice to look at, but driving around in Hayden is hazardous. It's like the whole area is driving blindly or straight up ignores the fact that other vehicles have the right to the road too. Get off of your cell phones and watch the road.
