The owner tried to disguise the smell with air fresheners and by leaving the windows open but the smell of damp was still immediately apparent on entry. Had we been staying longer than 2 nights and not arrived so late in the evening on the first night we would have left. "We have stayed in this Hotel on many occasions. It has recently been taken over by new owners, so improvement works are underway but did not interfere with our enjoyment. Disappointed to discover at check out we had to pay for parking at £15 per day. This was not the case in the past, when parking was free for residents. Good location with beautiful views of Lake Windermere"

"Perfect room for a night away with my daughter - Tarn How’s- and loved the roll top bath in bathroom. Staff were very friendly and helpful for breakfast and dinner to cater for my daughter’s lactose intolerance . Food was delicious . This is the second time I’ve stayed here and it’s still of the same high standard . Highly recommended ."

"Annual trip to Coniston for the Lakeland running weekend. Stopped in this hotel several times. Handy for the lake if you want to go paddleboarding, swimming etc. Staff are great. Food is perhaps overpriced for what you get but okay. Rooms are ALWAYS swealteringly hot. Tip the staff gave me on check out this time, ask for rom in the extension as it is brick so cooler."

"This is a fine old achool hotel, with large clean rooms, and a friendly staff. The reception rooms and bar are nice, but while we were, were totally overrun by a wedding party. The restaurant is okay. It is adjacent tobthe reception and the dinner is acceptable, but certainly not remarkable. Everything was a little overdone. The worst was the wedding, that had a performer signing full blast in the bar, and which was so loud the waiter could barely take our dinner order. It was extremely intrusive for all the other guests. The breakfast here is also very good. Suggest going to an outside restaurant if the hotel is booked out for a private event."

"Staff were very helpful and friendly. Room was comfortable and clean. Hotel was extremely dog friendly so we decided to have dinner at the hotel and they made a table up in one of the lounges so our dog could be with us, we had the same table for breakfast as well. The food was lovely for both dinner and breakfast. Very peaceful location with added bonus of views of lake Windermere and mountains."

"Great location Very good staff. The Winander section has its own very helpful staff and breakfast with great views. The room we had was a very spacious and well designed. My only comment was a shaving mirror would have been useful given the distance to the actual mirror. The spa access for hotel Guests was somewhat more limited than expected and the outdoor areas were completely separate and require extra payment. What is left in the swimming pool area is a little bit more limited than similar properties in the area we have tried."
