Teeming with local history and set apart from its surroundings by its rural atmosphere, this town is a great day trip from Miami.

On the fringe of Miami’s metropolitan area you’ll find Davie, Florida’s largest township and one with a distinctly agricultural atmosphere. Imagine you are in a Western town when you see its large farming industry, high number of cattle and a popular rodeo ground. Davie has almost a century of modern history but the recent discovery of an approximately 2,000-year-old skeleton tells us that there have been communities in the area for millennia.

Visit Davie for a day trip from central Miami you’ll be in the town within just 30 minutes by car or by boarding a public bus for a scenic tour through the sprawling Miami suburbs. Once in Davie, you’ll find a friendly community that, despite being overshadowed by one of North America’s most populous cities, still maintains the charm of a rural farming town.

Stop at the main attraction of the city, the Old Davie School, to learn about local history. Opened by R. P. Davie, for whom the town is named, the school brought a new hope and a chance for education to the town that had been known as Zona. Explore the Old Davie School Museum to see photographs, historic documents and artifacts from the region. Wander around the school to find the Viele House, Davie’s oldest residential building. Dating back to 1912, it is considered a notable work of architecture in the city. Its strength has been put to the test by numerous hurricanes and floods.

Join residents and visitors for a local rodeo at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. As you watch the event, look for some of Davie’s notable celebrities, including wrestler and actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The grounds have been adapted to cater for other activities as well, including concerts and monster truck races.

Accommodation is plentiful in Davie and often considerably cheaper than staying in the heart of Miami. Explore the town aboard the local bus or rent a car to see the surrounding district.

I enjoyed the city of Davie overall. I attended a class at the University of Florida IFAS branch. I dined at several locations throughout. None which were within a mile of the hotel. If you have a rental car, which I did... You can really get around
