Wherever you're coming from, flying can be a pleasurable experience if you've planned ahead. We've made a list of handy travel tips that will help get your Kathmandu vacation started on the right note.What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Firstly, and most importantly, put in your passport, official ID, credit cards and daily medications. Next, you'll need some entertainment to while away the hours. A juicy novel and a tablet crammed with your favorite shows are some fantastic options. If you plan to take a short nap, a quality neck pillow and some noise-canceling headphones will also come in handy. Finally, leave space for a toothbrush and some facial wipes so you'll step off the plane feeling fresh and raring to go.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Check carefully that you don't have sharp objects (like a knife or scissors) hiding in one of the zippers of your carry-on luggage. Other restricted items include flammable or explosive products, like aerosols and matches, and gels and liquids in containers with a capacity of more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters).

What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of your plane are no fashion runway. Layer yourself up with comfortable clothes and pack a cardigan as it can get quite cool in the cabin on long-haul flights. Flat, enclosed shoes are also a sensible choice.
• Most travelers are aware of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by long periods of inactivity. There's plenty you can do to reduce your risk. Don a pair of compression socks or tights, drink plenty of water and move your legs and feet. Do a few laps of the cabin or perform some stretches in your seat.

• Your travel documents and passport will need to be shown to security personnel. Keep them handy so you don't have to dig around for them.
• Time to strip down. Well sort of. Your belt, coat, keys and other contents of your pockets, like your headphones, will need to go on a tray through the X-ray machine. Make your life easier by removing them before your turn.
• Your electronic gadgets like phones and laptops will also need to go on a tray for inspection. No need to worry though, you'll be back online before you know it.
• Any gels or liquids, such as perfume or hairspray, that you want to take on board need to be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). Also, they all must fit inside a quart-size (one liter), clear zip-lock bag.
• Slip-on shoes are a sensible footwear choice as you're less likely to be required to remove them when passing through security. Big boots and other bulky shoes are usually subjected to additional screening.
• Airlines won't allow any sharp or pointed objects in your carry-on baggage. If you must bring these kinds of items, pack them in your checked baggage.
