"It’s hard to say what the most important thing is for a hotel stay. Is it 1) the property and room, 2) the food or 3) the staff? Well, it doesn’t matter with this property cause you’re winning on all 3. "Hotel is okay from a room/cleaniness. Check-in was a problem with both hotels.com and the actual check-in. Hotels.com doesn't handle international travel well as they didn't put in that the room we chose was double occupancy. It's not in our receipt which is telling me that it probably got lost in the email to the hotel. It's in the app but apparently that wasn't relayed to the hotel. When we checked in, the reception said it was for single occupancy although we paid the double rate already which is a hotels.com issue. The other issue is the reception person didn't actually speak Japanese in Japan. He had to go through an auto-interpreting device to speak to us in Japanese which is weird because you expect the hotel to speak the native language of the country. It would been fine if they don't speak English but not being able to greet us in Japanese and deal with issues in Japanese in Japan is a problem."
"I really enjoyed my stay at Kashiwaya Ryokan. Although it was long to get to without a car, it was worth the travel. The 2 days there didn’t feel like it was enough time. I will return again for sure. The room was comfortable, the private onsen were beautiful and amazing. The kaiseki served at dinner were delicious and perfectly balanced. The traditional Japanese breakfast (there were Western styled breakfast and brunch at the cafe in Shima Onsen town) was incredible as well. I want to thank the dedicated staff members I interacted with during my stay. They were kind and patient. I don’t recall all their names but I want to thank Hitomi, Yuho and Andrew for their help. I will recommend this ryokan to my friends. "
