This borough of central Stockholm blends upscale residential living and high-end shopping with a vibrant performing arts and nightlife scene.

Östermalm is one of Stockholm’s biggest and most populous neighborhoods, a place characterized by grand boulevards, opulent buildings and pretty parks. Easily accessible on foot or by boat and train, Östermalm attracts fashionistas, foodies and party lovers with its luxury shopping districts, superb restaurants, theaters and nightclubs.

Stroll along Karlavägen to get a feel for the neighborhood’s wealth and elegance. A tree-lined park runs through the center of this boulevard, which is framed by striking embassy buildings. The streets surrounding Humlegården park are home to some of Sweden’s most expensive real estate. Bring a picnic to enjoy on the lush green lawns of the park during the warm summer months or watch the world go by at Karlaplan plaza.

The hip and trendy congregate around the streets of the Bibliotekstan fashion district. Browse the latest designs from international brands such as Gucci, Prada and Jimmy Choo or shop for jewelry and cutting-edge Scandinavian design products. You can also satisfy your appetite with gourmet cuisine and seafood at Östermalm Food Hall.

History buffs will delight in the Viking-era exhibits, medieval art, Stone Age artifacts and prehistoric gold at the Swedish History Museum. The Swedish Army Museum retraces national military history from the 1500s onward. Join a guided tour of The Royal Stables and visit the Hallwyl Museum located in the extravagant former home of the aristocratic von Hallwyl family.

Book tickets for a show at the Royal Dramatic Theater, Sweden’s national theater housed in a beautiful Jugend-style building. Berwaldhallen is a concert hall and venue for performances by the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. The bars and nightclubs on Stureplan provide entertainment late into the night. For something more laid-back, admire the views of Djurgårdsbrunnsviken bay from Nobelparken or sit at a café on waterfront Strandvägen.

Reach Östermalm by taking the metro to Karlaplan, Östermalmstorg or Stadion stations. Passenger ferries arrive at the Nybrokajen and Strandvägen terminals from Djurgården, Gamla Stan and Södermalm.
