See 20th- and 21st-century contemporary art and dine at a highly acclaimed restaurant at this museum in central Stockholm.

At the Museum of Modern Art (Moderna Museet) find work by European masters and contemporary Swedish artists plus a large collection of multimedia art and photography. Browse the rotating collections made up of the museum’s 130,000 works of art.

Stop first at the displays on the fourth floor. Find work by Edvard Munch and Wassily Kandinsky in the Early Modernism to the 1940s exhibition. The Post-War Era to the 1970s exhibition covers the period from expressionism to pop art. Highlights include Apollo by Henri Matisse and Robert Rauschenberg’s Monogram. The Minimalism and Contemporary Art exhibition includes displays such as sculptures by Eva Hesse and photographs by Barbara Kruger.

Check the museum’s official website for details of temporary exhibitions. An example was The SupersSurrealists exhibition, which featured The Enigma of William Tell by Salvador Dalí, an artwork that rarely leaves the museum. Look for the Moment displays, which focus on individual artists. These displays can last from one day to several months.

In 1993, thieves broke into the museum and stole paintings by Picasso and Georges Braque. Look for the Henri Matisse painting, Le Jardin, recently recovered more than 25 years after its theft in 1987.

Younger visitors to the museum can enjoy the free Family Sunday events. Art educators take children aged 2 through 14 on a guided tour of the exhibitions followed by the chance to paint in the museum’s workshop. At the museum restaurant enjoy food inspired by Swedish television chef Malin Söderström. The dining area also offers nice views of the city’s Djurgården and Östermalm districts.

Located on Skeppsholmen, the Museum of Modern Art is a 15-minute walk from King’s Garden. Central Station is a 30-minute walk away. Pay-and-display parking is available outside the museum’s entrance but spaces fill up fast. Public buses are a more convenient option.

Moderna Museet is open from Tuesday through Sunday, except for select public holidays. See the museum’s website for details. Admission is free for visitors under 18. From July to September there are free guided tours in English. Alternatively, rent an audio guide for an extra charge.
