Fun experience in a traditional Japanese hotel. The dinner and lunch were great. Being right in the park made it super easy to visit the temple and feed the deer. The public bath is on the smaller side, but does the job. They called us a cab to the train station when we checked out which was nice.
The location of this ryokan at the edge of Nara Park is super, make it walkable right outside the gate. The small ryokan showed its past glory with a bar/restaurant and natural hotspring onsen. The service staffs were very attentive and professional. The breakfast and dinner were both impressive. We were very happy with our stay.

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service
Room was cosy and the staff very acommodating and nice! Language barriers were easily overcome with Google Translate when needed.
Unfortunately neither dinner or breakfast was to our liking, and we consider ourselves to be quite open for new food and tastes. It was our first meal with food of this kind, so difficult for us to rate if this is what it should taste like, or if the chef had a bad day.
The ryokan had an exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. They began our visit with a tea ceremony. The room was spacious and the public bath was enjoyable. They provided cool towels and ice water in the evening. They also provided very nice wagashi. We loved the location in the Nara Park. We could see deer just outside our window. The futnons were very comfortable and rooms clean.
Staying at Shikitei was a wonderful experience. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The facilities were tranquil and beautiful. Nara Park is so close, we were able to get my grandaughter feed the deer and run around even on our walk to the train station. Our stay matched the pictures and reviews that I read - such a great experience!
I had a Shiatsu massage there - it was very reasonable and so good that I wish I could have a massage like that at home!
Great location in a typical ryokan. Loved the comunal baths. The bathroom is small but has a bath and shower too. The lighting in the main room (ie the bedroom) (stark white light on the ceiling) and in the restaurant was unpleasant. One of the restaurant staff was very unpleasant - insisting we arrive before time and leave before the restaurant was closed. The japanese typical dinner course was very japanese, ie beautiful but tasteless and just plain weird.
Our stay at this traditional ryokan was a highlight of our journey, offering an authentic immersion into Japanese hospitality. Upon arrival, we were welcomed at a picturesque, temple like entrance and promptly greeted by attentive staff. Following the custom, our shows were stored downstairs before we were guided into a tranquil tea room. There we were offered hot towels, matcha tea, and delightful snacks, while the staff efficiently transported our luggage to our room and prepared it for our comfort.
The Ryokans personalized service extended to dining arrangements allowing us to select our preferred times for breakfast and dinner. Additionally they facilitated hourly massage sessions through reputable third party service, enhancing our relaxation during the stay.
Situated adjacent to Nara Park, the location was unparalleled. We enjoyed leisurely walks amidst the freely roaming deer, known for their charming bows to visitors offering crackers available from local vendors. The proximity to numerous shops and restaurants further enriched our experience providing ample opportunities for exploration and dining.
The only minor drawback was the absence of air conditioning. Fortunately, during our late March visit, the evening air was pleasantly cool, allowing us to comfortably crack a window for ventilation.
Overall, our stay at this ryokan was a memorable and culturally enriching experience.
The Shikitei is right on the edge of Nara Park - essentially it is in the park. In terms of position it couldn't be better.
It had all the comforts of a ryokan including a great onsen bath,, and wonderful staff.
I can't recommend it more highly.
The hospitality, the property and the food were exceptional!
If you have the opportunity to take the dinner and breakfast option, I would highly recommend it, absolutely fabulous!
This is a great property for those wanting to submerge themselves into Japanese culture.
This property was one of the highlights of our trip, and an experience that we will remember for many years. The service was excellent and property was beautiful.
We especially enjoyed the kaseki meal set. Every course was beautifully prepared, and the chef paid special attention to my partner's shrimp allergy.
I opted to add a massage after the dinner servcie, and it was honestly one of the best massages I have ever had. The masseuse used the perfect amount of pressure and I slept like a baby afterward.
The baths were lovely, with a variety of amenities available for after. Having a cold beer after a hot bath was amazing, especially in the comfy yukatas provided.
The provided breakfast was beautiful, and served with care. I enjoyed every bit.
The staff had limited english, but this did not diminish the service quality at all. Be respectful and use a translation app and you should be okay if this is a concern.
It was a very hot week in Nara, and on our way out they filled our bottles with water and ice. The service here was exceptional and I hope to be blessed enough to visit again.
