"I recently stayed at The Nines Hotel, which describes itself as “a stunning restaurant, public bar & boutique hotel.” A bold opening statement. On arrival, I found reception, foyer, restaurant and bar all rolled into one, so checking in felt like joining the queue for lunch. The crowd was a lively mix of diners, drinkers, families and night-outers, while I stood there with a suitcase wondering if I’d booked a room or entered a community centre. I was handed a key large enough to secure a shed and pointed vaguely toward the stairs. No lift, of course, which added excitement while carrying luggage and a suit. After navigating a maze of staircases, I reached my room and understood the key immediately — the lock looked like something from 1960s Russia. The room itself was tired. The navy carpet had seen things. The bed was comfortable, but the décor suggested the last refurbishment may have been interrupted by the fall of the Berlin Wall. Dinner was actually very good, although eating beside the check-in desk while guests arrived added a certain theatre to the experience. Later, I fancied a quiet pint. Absolutely no chance. The bar was packed and seats appeared reserved for diners only. Back in the room, the heating had it at tropical levels, while the window opened roughly an inch. Then a seagull outside spent the night making noises like a distressed elephant. At £99 it wasn’t bad, but it felt more B&B than boutique hotel. Upgrades are planned, not a moment too soon."

"The room was clean, bottles of water available and re-stocked daily. The staff overall were friendly and amenable, some more so than others. Breakfast was buffet selection, the service received was dependent on the staff. On the second morning we were served coffee at the table, rather than using the machine, and asked as we entered. From another client were informed that omelettes and poached eggs were available. This was not mentioned, nor advertised, yet there is a booklet on where all breakfast items are sourced Unable to comment on the bar. My only issue, which I did raise with reception, however more likely the booking platform rather than the hotel, was the price increase a few days before our arrival. I personally feel the price advertised at the time of booking, should be the price I'm paying, not an inflated price. "

"Second stay at pier 36. Again staff were fantastic. Our room this time was slightly dated and could do with a refresh, view was lovely. Breakfast was great and lots of it, staff very helpful. We didn’t eat here but the Sunday carvery looked so good. We will be back. "

"A little mix up with check in was quickly rectified by hotel staff. They were quick and professional and friendly. The upgrade they gave us was more than appreciated. Cultra Inn- amazing. Food was yummy. Breakfast- so good. Scenery and views-unreal. Hotel in general was just a treat. Bar was cosy and the drinks so tasty. The zest bar in the spa was really the only let down. The cafe area was dirty and unmanned late Friday afternoon. I waited for quite some time and was stood staring at dirty dishes and crates on the counter. I was looking forward to a drink and just left. The rest of the spa was lovely. we will absolutely be back. "
