Food and drink are great and worth staying when in Hakodate, Hokkaido.
Big room (Deluxe Twin A). Kitchen,2 sided balcony, quiet, clean everything i needed. Big onsen downstairs, great restaurants. not close to the station but walkable.
The hotel's check-in system needed an upgrade, and the afternoon check-in wait was excessively long. We booked a room for four people and were told that we needed to lay out the tatami mats ourselves, which was a bit inconvenient for foreigners, as all the other hotels on this trip had laid out extra tatami mats for us before check-in. Another major problem was the strong odor in the toilet; I had to borrow air freshener from the front desk. However, the hotel breakfast deserves praise; it had a wide variety of choices and tasted delicious.
The room was spacious, comfortable , and had a beautiful view of the ocean. The room had a convenient kitchen and access to all the amenities we needed. The onsen was relaxing and had various baths to choose from. I would definitely stay here again if I have the opportunity and I highly recommend it to other travelers.
The staff was great and initially the room felt great but as I stayed I saw the cracks. The WiFi is atrocious, the sink out side the bathroom is very close to the door and feels very tight. There’s barely any room to place your luggage in the room. If you need to do laundry, go somewhere else to do it as the dryers will need about two hours to dry your clothes. There’s only 3 washers and dryers so it was struggle to share with other guests. The breakfast buffet was just ok. Also the hotel does not offer luggage shipping. This ended up being my least favorite hotel so far.

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service, room comfort
We had a large room for 3 pax. There were 2 twin beds and a futon for our party. The room is large with a living room, balcony, kitchenette and a washing machine only. A drying rack is provided if you do laundry. The room feels a little dated but is comfortable. We liked that this hotel is jsut a few minutes walk from Omori beach. Calling for a taxi to get to places eg Mt Hakodate Ropeway and the morning market is very easy.
We had a Seaview King room with a small kitchenette which came in very handy. Picked Up sweet corn from the morning market and then had it for supper and it was the best sweet corn I've ever had. It was a relatively large room with a big bathroom, tub and shower with separate toilet area. The hotel is a bit far from the train station less than 1km and an easy walk with a lot of restaurants and stores Along the way. Would stay again if I am in the area.
A large and well designed onsen setup on ground floor attached to the natural source. Great for those who would enjoy such setup.
Maintenance is very good for the age of this property. Rio resorts is really doing this region a great service by reviving this formerly decaying hotel in a depressed area. It is a good 20 minute walk from the main drag where everyone wants to be at.
The "premium tower" houses the very large rooms with balconies featuring extremely traditional layout. Where the toilet is in a separate room far away from the bathroom.
Now also has a coin laundry and game center, both can come in handy for traveling families.
There is a great "cash only" genuine ramen stand just across the street. McDonalds is 3 blocks away together with a healthy ecosystem of very local restaurants of various type.
The beach, which Hakodate is not particularly known for, is only one block away. The city has at least one project going on to improve the beach front area at the moment.
Staff are super friendly and superbly helpful, giving me a very good first impression of rio resorts management.
This was by far the largest room we had in Japan, it was more like an apartment! We really liked the small tatami room with the sliding screens. It is close enough to the train station to walk, and near bars and restaurants. The hotel itself was very high class. The only reason I took off a star was terrible WiFi, it's free but so weak it's basically non-existent. We thought it was because we were on the 14th floor but also had issues in the lobby. We raised the matter to the staff, but the response (possibly a translation issue) was that it was free and they cannot confirm it will work. Every place we've stayed has free WiFi, and we've never had this issue. We ended up using a hotspot from our Japanese cell provider. This may be an issue for any foreign travelers trying to work from the room. Other than our WiFi issue, it was a great stay. This is an elegant hotel, good area and very nice staff.
I liked pretty much everything about the place. It had a balcony and had ready access to most parts of Hakodate.
The main improvement I would suggest is some form of anti-slip mat in the shower room.
