Brilliantly attentive staff, excellent breakfast and great location right on the sea shore.
It is a very old hotel but still has its charm. Location in front of the beach is a big plus, The security at the hotel is good, the food is good. Overall, this old lady is still kicking.
Overall, this is a good property in a sketchy area. The staff is friendly.

The hotel is in desperate need of a makeover. The rooms are clean, the water is hot, but the faucet can be replaced. You have to turn the knob around 5 full times before the water comes out. Then it's not even a smooth stream, but a multi angle spread. My room was located in the middle of the building between the stairs and the elevator. There are seats in front of my door, so it can get pretty noisy even late into the night. The area where the building is located is good....right in front of the beach with lots of food options. The staff were great!
The hotel staff is beyond the friendliest and most helpful staff I have ever encountered while traveling extensively. From the hotel manager, reception desk, the restaurant, and the housekeeping staff, everyone was incredible. We had a room facing the water, so it was incredible to look out the windows and clearly see the water and beach. The room was not noisy at all. Breakfast had lots of options and we ate dinner in the hotel almost every night. We already booked this hotel for next year for 10 days.
The Balmoral Hotel is a bit dated but clean. In my room the AC didn't initially work but two quick visits from staff and that was remedied. The bathroom is VERY TINY and the shower/tub requires a big step up to get in and out.
The Balmoral is right on the beach and has lots of restaurants nearby which is convenient. There are vendors who set up at the beach too. Note the sockets are different than in other parts of South Africa. I didn't have the correct adapter here when I did in Cape Town and Sodwana Bay.
Very old hotel, charming and quaint, its beachfront but unsafe to walķ to beach, bothered by homeless beggars and illegal sellers..parking was safe and secure at the rear. Staff was friendly, helpful and very pleasant. As my wife is disabled the first disabled room was unsuitable due to the shower . We were moved to a better equipped bathroom which improved our stay.
Arrived after a 29 hour flight from USA
In checking in they did not find my booking which i had done online and later told that their system had nit updated, this booking was done a month prior and should have updated.Got my room after this delay and
Pushed a heavy trolley to 3 rd floor where I discovered the room was not made and the former occupants still had things there and they were late to check out.How could the room be declared clean in the system
Took more than 20 minutes to be moved to another room
Found the room already open and the manager forgot to give me room keys
Went down again to collect keys
Came back twice and keys were not working
At night there was extremely loud music and partying till 4 am right across the hotel
Never had a minute of sleep
Why can't the hotel work with local authorities to limit the time that people can play music at the beach
This was my worst experience at a hotel and was planning to bro g a group of friends from USA and I will not subject them to this standard
A bad experience and certainly not a 4 star rating worthy, poorly maintained . Dirty carpet and lifting floor boards .

The personnel went out of their way to make it a good experience. The politeness of the staff was evident right from the security guard outside to the cleaners.
Old style colonial hotel like going back in time! Very helpful staff. Lovely setting right on the beach in Durban. Some of the fixtures and fittings could do with refreshing or updating - for instance stair carpets very worn. Overall a very good experience though.

Totally appalled to arrive home to the UK to be informed that my credit card had been subject to credit card fraud of a few hundred GB pounds and I know that it had to be by a member of staff at this hotel. So watch out there are criminals at this hotel.
