Dorothy Chandler Pavilion
Dorothy Chandler Pavilion

One of the largest performing arts centers in the U.S. welcomes the Los Angeles Opera along, dance recitals and comedy acts to its auditorium.

Visit the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion is a large center for the performing arts in the heart of Los Angeles. It has an impressive semi-circular formation, its church-like apse flanked by white pillars between dark panels of glass. Admire the imposing aesthetic of the theater, with tall palm trees making up the foreground.

Enter the site and appreciate the ornate décor and majestic spiral staircases. In the auditorium, notice the gorgeous hanging chandeliers made from 24,000 individual pieces of crystal brought here from Munich.

Built in 1964, the theater is named for a patron of the arts who pushed to revive the city’s performing arts scene and create a home for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra has moved to an adjacent hall, leaving the pavilion as the home of the Los Angeles Opera, among various other regular performers. Attend the Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center.

Watch ballet, opera and classical recitals in this prestigious complex. You can also see some of your favorite stand-up comics gracing this stage. The Academy Awards were presented here more than 20 times between 1969 and 1999. On Christmas Eve, head to the pavilion for a traditional celebration with dance groups and music acts.

Relax on the grass just outside the building and admire the Arthur J. Will Memorial Fountain. Enjoy a hot beverage at one of the charming coffee shops around the park.

The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion occupies the northwestern corner of Grand Park. Ride a bus to one of the stops in the center of Los Angeles or walk west for 20 minutes from Union Station. You can also travel by metro to Civic Center/Grand Park stop.

While in the area, visit some of the nearby sights, including the Walk Disney Concert Hall, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels and The Broad art museum.
