• Flying can be a great experience if you bring the right stuff. First things first, you'll need basic toiletries, such as a toothbrush and hairbrush, a fresh change of clothes and a few magazines. Secondly, make room in your hand luggage for your electronic gadgets, chargers, any medications and maybe a blow-up neck pillow too. Lastly, and most importantly, be sure to take your passport, travel documents and your credit cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Put all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and hair gel in your checked baggage. Any gels or liquids in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) will be confiscated by authorities. Sharp or pointed objects, like your pocket knife, and dangerous goods which are flammable or explosive, such as aerosol cans, spray paint and poisons, are also not allowed.

What to wear on a flight:

• Comfort should be your top priority when choosing what to wear on your flight. Loose clothing is a smart choice, as are flat, slightly roomy shoes.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a risk on long-distance flights. It's the result of blood clots forming due to poor circulation and inactivity, so do some gentle foot and leg exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression tights or socks.

The secret is to be well organized before you arrive at security. That way, you'll be stepping onto that plane to Miyakojima in no time at all. Follow these tips and get your vacation off to a spectacular start:

• Your passport and travel documents will need to be inspected by airport security personnel. Keep them at hand so you don't hold up the queue.
• The X-ray machine comes next. Empty your pockets and remove anything metal that is likely to set off the scanner's alarm. This includes things like headphones or earphones, as well as heavy coats or jackets. They'll all need to go on the X-ray conveyor belt.
• For just a few moments, you'll need to unplug from technology. Your phone, tablet and any other electronic gadgets will also need to be sent through the scanner.
• Any liquids or gels, such as toothpaste or perfume, that you want to take on board need to be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). Also, they all must fit inside a quart-size (one liter), clear zip-close bag.
• It's also possible you'll be asked to take your shoes off for scanning, so wearing lightweight sneakers is always a wise idea.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them in your checked baggage. They won't be allowed in the cabin.
