Amarante probably had its origin in the primitive peoples who inhabited the Aboboreira mountain range (inhabited since the Stone Age), although the exact name of its founders is unknown. However, it only began to gain importance and visibility after the arrival of São Gonçalo (1187-1259), born in Tagilde, Guimarães, who settled here after pilgrimage through Rome and Jerusalem. To this saint is attributed the construction of the old bridge over the River Tâmega.

Casa da calçada in Amarante it's a Beautiful place to relax in a weekend. It's in the city center and it's in front of the Tâmega river. The restaurant has one Michelin star.

Excellent stay
Beautiful surroundings and room amenities. Staff are very welcoming and helpful. We tried the spa and sauna, which was good for a relaxing vacation. Not many dining options around and we stayed in the hotel restaurant for dinner, A bit expensive than average but affordable.

Everything about the place is beautiful and deserves a longer stay to enjoy all the amenities. Unfortunately, the town is charming but does not offer much for more than 1 night. If I could do it again, I would arrive earlier to enjoy the facilities and great restaurants, spa, etc., and still have ...
