This university town in Oklahoma is the home of Red Dirt music and country singer Garth Brooks, as well as museums and acres of outdoor recreation.

Stillwater appeals with its large parks and lakes, live music scene and young student population that give the town its energy.

Stillwater is proud of its musical heritage. Numerous musicians started their careers in its bars including country singer Garth Brooks, and Red Dirt music originated from here. The genre is a mixture of blues, country and rock 'n' roll and gets its name from the color of Oklahoma's soil.

Check out the live music on "The Strip" on Washington Street, Stillwater's principle nightspot. Pull up a chair in front of the stage at Willie’s Saloon where Garth Brooks gave his first live public performance. See more original live music at legendary nightspots, The Tumbleweed Ballroom and Stonewall Tavern.

“The Strip” is adjacent to the Oklahoma State University. Follow the crowds of visitors who go on walking and bus tours of the university's extensive grounds. If you are traveling with children take Pistol Pete's Pursuit, a self-guided scavenger hunt through the campus.

Gain insights into Stillwater’s past at the Sheerar Museum. Find out what makes a champion at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum. View trophies, uniforms and sculptures. Read the Wall of Champions inscribed with the names of those who have achieved excellence in the sport. Browse exhibits dedicated to the 1948 Olympic wrestling team and to African American wrestlers.

With more than thousands of acres of parks and several lakes, Stillwater offers an abundance of outdoor activities. Try swimming, boating and other watersports on Stillwater's three principle lakes: Lake McMurty, Lake Carl Blackwell and Boomer Lake. Cycle, jog or walk in the trails around these bodies of water. Lake McMurty features 27 miles (43 kilometers) of hiking and biking trails. Ride dirt bikes at Area 51 Motocross Park and practice your swing on the city's golf courses.

Oklahoma’s humid subtropical climate means the outdoors can be enjoyed year round. Be prepared during tornado season between March and August, as Stillwater is located in an area known as “Tornado Alley” where storms are common. Obey warning systems and ask for your nearest shelter.

Stillwater is located 65 miles (105 kilometers) north of Oklahoma City. Rent a car to enjoy the surrounding lakes.

"We have stayed here several times- The staff has always been very nice and helpful.. The room was clean. The hotel is so convenient to the campus, we walk everywhere- only suggestion, do not stay in room 325, it is right below the bar, very loud, moving chairs etc around."
