Zermatt

Ski, climb and enjoy the exceptional natural beauty of this Swiss city where one of the world’s most spectacular mountains dominates the skyline.

Come to Zermatt and enjoy one of Europe’s most iconic views, the perfect triangle of the Matterhorn. Hike, ski or ride your bike through the surrounding mountains, eat in one of the many fine restaurants and enjoy the serenity of a completely car-free town.

Wake to nothing but the sound of birdsong and decide which of Zermatt's many activities you want to try. Walk along cobbled streets past chalets and barns and enjoy the fresh alpine air. Hikers and climbers are spoilt for choice, as Zermatt has options to suit all abilities. Breithorn is the easiest of the taller mountains, while the Matterhorn and Switzerland’s tallest mountain Monte Rosa require more experience.

In winter, ride the highest cable car in the world to the Klein Matterhorn and ski the 8-mile (13-kilometer) run all the way to Zermatt. In summer, take advantage of Europe’s largest summer time ski field, Trockener Steg. In the evening, sample superb cuisine in the restaurants or mix with the Swiss elite in sophisticated wine bars.

In summer, take a trip on the Gorner Ridge railway. Once a week, the train departs Zermatt at dawn and travels high into the mountains offering superb sunrise views and stopping to allow you time for an easy scenic walk among the peaks.

Zermatt is one of the more expensive European ski resorts and is home to many renowned hotels. If you are travelling on a budget, camping in the area can be a good option, even during winter, which is surprisingly mild.

Much of Zermatt’s appeal is the complete absence of motorized vehicles. This obviously means you can’t drive into town, so the best way is to get the train. If you do drive, park in the neighboring town of Täsch, 5 miles (7 kilometers) away and take the cog railway train or electric shuttle bus to this unique and beautiful town. With snow all year round, Zermatt is a destination for any season.

Great experience although snow conditions were not very good during our visit. Scenery was outstanding. Enjoyed the many on mountain restaurants. Quaint town with lots of dining and shopping opportunities.

Loved Zermatt. Quaint with cute shops and good restaurants. Not pretentious. And of course, loved seeing the Matterhorn.

One of the nicest towns in the Alps, with a wide variety of shopping and dining options, from the upscale and international to the homey and local. Fantastic skiing right on town.
