It was our last day on Easter Island and Bill, our tour guide, learned that we hadn't yet been to Ahu Vinapu and he wouldn't let us leave without seeing it. Although unrestored, it is the only ahu (stone platform) built entirely of Incan quality stonework. Although the story behind its unique construction is lost to time, Bill suggested that perhaps the technique was too time-consuming and was abandoned in favor of the faster, loose stack approach. The stonework itself predates similar work from South America, so it's unlikely that some wayward pre-Inca stone builder happened upon the island and fashioned this temple.
