The Avenue Inn and Spa

"They are very strict about staying over in their parking spots, even when it’s dead. The pool water was really gross and left your suit smelling funky. The water was greenish and murky. You couldn’t see the bottom! They seemed understaffed, even though it didn’t appear to be a busy week. A lot of times when going to the front desk, there was no one there. When I asked about checking labels for a food allergy, the responsible person could not be found. This was for a child with a life-threatening food allergy, so she couldn’t eat the food. The distance to the beach is great and the man who has run the shuttle for years and hoses the beach chairs down is so sweet and helpful. Other than the cleaning crew, he was the only pleasant person on staff. On a plus side, the lobby atmosphere is very well set up and welcoming. If you’re stuck in on a rainy day, they have games and warm tea out, which was really nice. Plus there’s milk and cookies for an hour at night. We always love that, even if we can’t catch it in time."

"The staff’s customer service skills were exceptional, the room was clean and the ocean view was great. I booked for 1 night but decided to stay an extra night and was given the same room because the customers that booked my room decided they wanted a two queen bed room not the king room, so I got to keep the king room. The beach is a few feet away and there is a patio that faces the beach where you can sit and relax. I give Henlopen Hotel five stars plus and the bonus is it is clean affordable. Thank you for an amazing hotel experience!"

"We recently stayed at this hotel and overall had a great experience. It is in walking distance of several restaurants, the beach, etc., there's a lot of stores around it. The location is perfect, especially with small children. The front desk staff were amazing, all very helpful and super friendly, same with the restaurant staff and the guy that came to our room to fix something. The people cleaning are not as friendly and honestly the room wasn't super clean either, the drawers were dusty and the bathroom surfaces didn't seem very clean either. Also, our beds also were not made when they came to clean, they only took the trash out and replaced the towels. Overall, I feel like this wasn't a deterrent since we had such a great time and the rest of the staff is great; but definitely something worth mentioning. We are already planning our next stay at this hotel."

"Very Clean and The new management that took over has kept it up nicely. Still love the covered parking spots that keep your vehicle out of the sun. Location is great IMO because it’s quiet and I don’t mind the 3 block walk to the boardwalk. Only negative and just a small one is that the tv remote/ cable service was not good. Couldn’t get tv program guide to come on with the remote, so just channel surfed until I found something to watch. It was raining so was inside tv watching otherwise wouldn’t have even turned tv on. Would definitely stay again. Everything else was great. No issues."
