I tried to leave my bag early there was no one prior to 15h. I would have liked a do not leave your valuables in your bag but place your bags here at your own risk... There is barely any explanation of anything. There is however a few english sign here and there allowing you to figure it out on your own. There is no option except the onsen to clean yourself. A bit noisy. Allthogether not bad for the price. It's a do it yourself type of place.
far from the station .when arrived .as nobody was there we ring as requested. 4 times... after 45mun waiting we decide to come in anyway. a guy was inside he just did not answer. just give us a key and nothing else. no help or basic explanation how is working the guest house. room on the 3rd floor with big luggage wonderful.. only one bath open from 6am to 8am in the morning.do not expect to wake late...and 2h also in the afternnon. female part was really tiny only one persone can change no place for 2. for male one my husband told me it was disgusting...noise on the night and smell from gas from the outside. no bed explanation. good for us that we know how to do japonese bed but for newbee forget it. internet work poorly. we could have breakfast or dinner but need reservation but we never found anybody to ask :-( forget this place!!
Takayama was amazing. The location of this place is hard to beat, impossible at this price. The room I stayed in was ~11tatami mats with two big windows. The have a lovely koi pond on premises. They have an adorable but incredibly comforting onsen on the main floor. It is feet from the river and a 1m walk from the morning market leading in to old town, filled with friendly shopkeepers. Shops close up early, so be sure to get your dinner in before 6pm or head toward the city for food.
I never tried the in house food but I'm sure it was good, their kitchen looked well worked.
The only issue I could see for some people is the service. It isn't that it was bad, the staff were very friendly and I'm sure willing to help out, but it was mostly a 'do it yourself' type place. They provide clean sheets, towels, yukata, toothbrush/paste, hot water for tea, and cups. This might throw off less adventurous foreigners who haven't used a futon before. If you like being left to your own devices, you'll probably love this system.
Great place to stay. I had a great experience with their Japanese dinner, ¥2000 for a huge meal and they catered to my non-fish diet (although I should have said seafood). Great baths and nice rooms. Slight downside was English level but they tried hard and we always understood basics. Definitely recommend. Great for the price but I think people who like a bit more luxury would still like it. I was surprised by all the extra bits in the room like table, cushions, tea, hot water, heaters, tv, yukata (dressing gown).
I booked a room for 2 nights with breakfast, I was told that breakfast was not included despite signs pointing to the breakfast room and indicating the time it is served. No instructions were given - ie. location of bathroom, wifi code, evacuation procedures (important in a country like Japan), and no instructions on how to behave - the hotel was so noisy due to people not knowing how to behave in a traditional Japanese Inn, so were talking loudly, slamming doors, and showing general disrespect to others. In other Ryokan I have stayed at there have been instructions given to guests about how to behave - perhaps this hotel should do the same. I also started sneezing uncontrollably at this hotel - I am allergic to certain types of pollen and dust - I didn't sneeze anywhere else in Japan, so the pollen was not a problem, it was the dusty hotel. I also am suffering from insect bite marks on my arms and legs after staying here. This hotel is in a good location, but could do a lot better to improve the guest experience.
easy to find, walking distance to town, with spa service.

Liked: Cleanliness
Disliked: Staff & service, room comfort
Good value, but spartan rooms.
Japanese style room. We had difficulty sleeping because of the thin futons. They do not have black out curtains as advertised, so light was a big problem. Room was a good value, but don't waste your time visiting Takayama. Nothing to see or do and the restaurants are only open from 11 to 2 and 5:30 to 7, so you must be on their schedule. They are tourist oriented and relatively expensive.
it's better than I thought. The location is excellent. It locates near the famous market and traditional main street, only take few minutes to reach all famous scenes.
Great place to stay, nice, warm and clean rooms and a really lovely spa! Didn't see much of that staff but everyone that we did interact with were friendly.
