Spello

Travel Guide
Spello showing a small town or village and night scenes
Discover Roman architecture and see streets covered in floral paintings during an annual festival in this ancient walled city in the Umbrian countryside.

Make a daytrip from Perugia and explore nearby Spello, a medieval village considered one of the most beautiful in Umbria. The city has a vibrant culture and presents two popular festivals as well as regular concerts and events. Admire Spello’s quaint flower-lined streets and historic architecture, including many churches and plazas. Hike up the mountain that overlooks the historic city center and discover Roman ruins.

Sign up for a walking tour to get your bearings. Learn about Spello’s centuries of history as you pass by ancient sites. Visit the medieval church Santa Maria Maggiore, near the main square. The church has a Romanesque portal and a 13th-century bell tower. Another church worth visiting is Santa Maria di Vallegloria, majestically perched on a hilltop.

As you approach the edge of the city, see the well-preserved city walls that once defended Spello from attack. Three Roman gates can still be observed and through them, you can take stunning photographs of the Umbrian countryside beyond. Climb to the top of the hill that overlooks the city for scenic views. See the Roman arch perched at the top.

Visit Spello during Corpus Domini, normally in late May or early June, for the festival of L’Infiorata (Floral Carpets). The streets are laid with beautiful floral paintings made from flowers handpicked by locals in the surrounding hills. This annual event attracts visitors from all over the world and is not to be missed.

Visit in August for the cultural and arts festival, when free open-air concerts and exhibitions take place across the city. Stop by a café for a crostata, a traditional Italian baked tart, with a glass of passito, Spello’s sweet dessert wine.

Spello is located just 18.6 miles (30 kilometers) from Perugia and can be reached by car or bus. While you are in the region, visit the two nearby medieval villages, Collepino and San Giovanni.

Nice hotel outside Perugia
"Nice clean hotel with the pool outside the Perugia city, staff was very friendly and willing to help. The breakfast was fine, I would welcome wider selection of salami and egg styles. But otherwise it was a nice stay."

We had a wonderful time shopping for produce at the open air market the morning after we arrived. It was not necessary to speak Italian to do business with the vendors. We also enjoyed the beautiful potted plants and hanging baskets in the streets.
