Waking up early has its perks! This is sunrise over the Peten Itza Lake in Flores, Guatemala. <3
A 5 or 6 days tour takes you into the jungle of Guatemala. The tours start from Flores where you take a car to Carmelita. From there it's a 5 or 6 days tour on foot. Every night you sleep at a different camp and you have the opportunity to explore different ancient ruins along the way. There are a ton of different tour operators in Flores. Some more honest than others. So make sure to talk to a couple before you decide on one. It's worth choosing one where there is a guide and someone separate to cook and to look after the mules. We went with Dinastia Kan "El Mirador" and were very very happy with our choice.

Having a lake with beach access was amazing. The sauna and pool was wonderful. The restaurant was pretty unremarkable. It was nice that breakfast was included but some of the items on the breakfast buffet was at room temperature. WIFI is super spotty in the rooms.

Raíces restaurant was excellent. Beautiful lake views. Close to airport but a drive to ruins. We will stay in Flores next time we come to see ruins.

This is my most epic self-portrait, so far: Contemplating the Milky Way, standing all alone on top of El Henequén—one of the many ancient mayan temples you'll find along the way to El Mirador—surrounded by monkeys, fireflies and an ocean of trees. No wonder why our ancestors looked up into the sky and thought of mighty gods.
