Agriculture is an important staple of the Romanian economy. The country has traditionally been a producer of wheat, corn and meats. As you travel around the rural regions, look for vineyards Romania is one of Europe’s largest wine producers.

Bucharest sits in the south and serves as one of the main gateways to the country. Sit under the beautiful Arcul de Triumf, a monument honoring Romanian soldiers who fought in World War I. Other notable landmarks include the Royal Palace, the former home of Romanian monarchs.

Discover the enchanting landscapes of Transylvania in central Romania. This is the home of well-preserved medieval towns such as Brasov, as well as beautiful Gothic castles such as Bran Castle. Bran Castle was also the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. In the Transylvanian town of Sibiu, find the Brukenthal Palace, which offers a glimpse into classic Romanian art.   The Moldova and Bucovina regions in northern Romania are filled with stunning churches and rolling hills. See the Painted Monasteries of Bucovina, a UNESCO-listed site known for its colorful frescos. The town of Suceava features several noteworthy religious sites including St. George Church and the Zamca Monastery. Bring your hiking boots to tackle the steep, winding climbs of the Bicaz Gorges in the Eastern Carpathians.

To get to Romania, fly into Henri Coanda International Airport in Bucharest. From here, take a taxi or the express bus to the city center. There are two additional airports in Romania, which make domestic flights a popular option for traveling through the country. Buses are also an efficient way of getting around, although schedules change often so it’s best to double check departure times shortly before you leave.

Winter sports enthusiasts should consider a trip to Romania in the winter months when the scenic slopes of the mountainous ski resorts open.
