Staying at the 1872 River House was, hands down, one of the highlights of our trip to Portugal. Nestled right on the banks of the Douro River, this charming boutique hotel perfectly blends historic character with modern elegance. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm hospitality that felt more like visiting old friends than checking into a hotel.
The location is unbeatable — just a short walk to Ribeira Square, yet peaceful enough to escape the tourist buzz. Our room had a view straight out of a postcard: floor-to-ceiling windows opened onto the river, and we spent every morning sipping coffee while watching the boats drift by. It was magical.
