My husband and I went for our 2 year wedding anniversary. It was not for us, and we would not go back or recommend it. We ended up changing our flight and leaving a day early, that is how uncomfortable we were. The biggest issue for us was that we did not feel comfortable relaxing inside of the rooms, even in the beachfront villa we ended up upgrading to, hoping that the issues in our first, smaller villa wouldn’t persist. Unfortunately they did - and by they I mean the cockroaches in the bathroom. This is unacceptable to us in a luxury resort that charges a $1600 card hold along with a $200+ non refundable tax at check in. All of the rooms at the resort are on the ground level, which probably accounts for a lot of the wildlife you will see in your rooms, including large spiders and a lot of mosquitoes. My husband and I are still recovering from the bites a week later as I write this review. The rooms roofs are thatched like island huts, so besides what also may be living up there, when a storm hits the roof degrades and sprays the thatch all around the room and bed. Playa del Carmen is suffering from the sargassum issue, it is really bad. You cannot swim in the ocean and it smells terrible. The best part of the hotel is the pool, but you are only there for a couple hours max a day. And you must watch two men with small wheelbarrows works tirelessly in the heat as they attempt to pick up the seaweed and haul it away from the beach past you by the pool. It’s depressing.
